htpbaad nod to year company a hearty
welcome; it will more-than compensate
for every other deficiency ; it will eyince
love for your husband, good sense in
yourself, and that politeness in manners,
which acts as the most powerful charm !
It will give to the plainest fare a zest su
perior to all luxury can boast.—Never be
discontented on any occasion of this nature.
In the next place, as your husband’s
success in his profession will depend up
on his popularity, and as the manners of a
wife have qo little influence in extending
or lessening the respect and esteem of
others for her husband you should take
care to be affable and polite to the poor
est as well as the richest. A reserved
baughtioess is a sure indication of a weak
mind and an unfeeling heart.
With respect to your servants, teach
ihem to love and respect you, while you
expect from them a reasouable discharge
of their respective duties. Never tease
your*elf, or them, by scolding ; it has no
other effect than to render them discon
tented and imnertiuent. Admonish them
with a calm firmness.
Cultivate vour mind by tho perusal ol
those books which instruct while they
amuse. Do not dovote much nf your
time to novels ; there are a few which
may be useful and improving, and in giv
ing a higher tone to your moral sensibili
ty ; but they tend to vitiate the taste, and
to produce a disrelish for substantial and
in'eilocfual food. Most plays are of the
same cast; they are not friendly to the
delicacy which is one of the ornaments of
female cliaracier. History, Geography,
Poetry, Moral Essay*, Biography, Tra
vels, Sermons, and other well written pro
ductions, will not fail to enlarge your un
derstanding, to render you a more agree
able companion, and to exalt your virtue.
A woman devwid of rational ideas of reli- j
gion, has no security for her virtue ; it is
sacrificed to her passions, whose voice,
not that of God, is her only governing
principle. Besides, in those hours of ca
lamity to which families must be exposed,
where will she find support, if it be not in
her jest reflections upon that all-ruling
Providence which governs tho Universe,
whether animate or inanimate.
Mutual politeness between the most
intimate friends is essential to that har
mony, which should never be onco broken
or interrupted. How important then is
it between man and wife!—The more
warm tlie attachment the less will cither
par ty bear to be klighturi or treated with
the smallest degree of rudoness or inat
tention, This politeness, then, if it be
nntau itself n virtue is at least the menu*
of gtffing to real goodness anew lustre;
it if the me.ins of preventing discontent,
and strsn quarrels ; it is the oil of inter
course, it removes asperities, and giscato
every thing a smooth, an even, and a
pleasing movement.
I will only add, that autti imomal hap
pines* does not depend upon wealth ; no,
it m not to he found in wealth ; but in
minds properly tempered and suited to
our r**<«|u>erjvo situations. Competency
is necessary ; all beyond that point is
»dmil. Do not supposo, however, that I
would not advise your husband to aug
ment hi* property by all honest mid com
mendable moans. I would wish to see
bun actively engaged in *urh a pursuit,
because engagement, a sedulous employ
ment in obtaining some laudnbte end. is
essential to happiness. In the attain
ment of a fortune, by honorable means,
and particularly bv professional exertion,
a man derives particular satisfaction in
self applause, as well as from the increas
ing estimation m which ho is held by thoso
around him.
In the management of your domestic
concerns, lei prudence, and wise econo*
my prevail. l.et neatness, order and
judgment be seen in all your ditlerent de
partment*. Unite liberality with n just
liugality ; always reserve something for
the hand of charity ; and never let your
door be closed to ill* voice of tulTerinj;
humanity. Your servants, tn particular,
will have the strongest claim upon your
chanty let them bo well fed, well cloth
ed, nursed in sickness, and never let them
be unjustly treated
Hunting Spiders. There is a tribe of
bunting spiders that leap like timers on
their prey ; and, what is more extraordi
nary, have the faculty of doing so side
way*. One of these jumped two feet on
a bumble-bee. They approach the ob
ject of their in eudej attack with the
noiseless aud imperceptible motion of the
shadow of a sunilial. If ihe flv move,
the spider moves also, backwards, for
wards, or tideways, and that with to much
precision as to ’ime and distance, ihst the
two insects appear as if bound togeihei bv
some invisible chain, or actuated by the
same spirit. If the fly take wmg and
pitch behind the spider, the hrad of the
Utter is turned round to meet it so quick
ly that the hnmao eye is deceived, and
the spider appears to be motionless.—
Wben all these mancruvres bring the fly
within its spring, the leap is made with
fearful rapidity, and the prey struck down
like lightning. The redeeming trait in
i the history of these cruel creatures is
i ‘be i affection k»r tbrir young.

Mr. AVm. W. PoTTr.n;—>
DEAR SIR :-T»o years have now elapsed
since my daughter Marv Aim lias been, try
the nice of your invaluable Medicine, restored to
a state of much better health than we could rea
ronnhly have expected ; and as a duty I owe to
suffering humanity, and gratitude to yourself,
tender this, 1 1 listing it may prove useful tothosta
similarly atllicted
About twelve years ago she co.. p .nindof ac
vote pains in her bark and bip, .v nch grew'
worse and worse, until she was almost unable to
move, or turn herself in bed. During this pe
riod tier back aud hip swilled very much, and
the puin extended down the leg, which lost its
natural power: a wasting of Hi sh—loss of appe
tite, and emaciation ensued, and her countenanc*
depicted misery. She continued without much,
if any, alteration for she better, (keeping her
strictly under the advice of an eminent medical
gentleman,J for a considerable time, when tho
• welling on the hip began to increase ; her phy
sician's prescriptions became useless; they re
commended the steel jaekd —one was procured,
tried, tint in vain, and Ihe disease seemed to hid
defiance to all the well known remedies in that
complaint, that were here employed. She was
then considered as incurable. Her sister having
died of the same coinplaint, after an illness of
four years, we were of opinion that Mary Aon
must share the same fate. Having heaid of tho
remarkable sneer** of your Catholicon in scro
fulous complaints, I was teso v«d to make a trial
of it. She began to use it, and iu a few days
the swelling on the hip broke, and discharged
greatly: she could then use her crutches—in a
few week* longer her pains disappeared—th 4
discharge ceased—the ulcer healed—her appe
tite returned—and her whole system resumed its
wonted vigor. I believe, had your invaltiahka
medicice been used when she first complained, it
would have prevented her from being a cripplo
tor the rest of her life.
With many thanks for the benefits which my
dau-hter ha* derived from the use of your invulc
liable Catlsolicon. I remain
Yours, Respectfully,
JOHN M'CURDY, Juu.
