It may be easily supposed that, when this prac

After the disasters in Russia, Madame Montes
quieu had added these words to her pupil’s in
fantine prayers s "0 God! inspire papa with
'the desire of making peace, for the happiness of
France, and all of us.” Napoleon happened one
evening to be in bis son’s apartments at his pray
■mr hours. Madsme de Montesquieu changed
toothing, and the Emperor heard the child re
peat the words we have quoted. He made no
veply on the subject.
When his boy was born, great was the bustle
•in France. As Madame Durand wag present
■with the Empress Maria Louise at her accouche
ment, and Mademoiselle Ducrest with the Ex-
Empress Josephine when the news arrived, w*
learn both sides o f the story ; we have a copious
report of the event itself, and of its effect upon
the poor divorcee.
The case was one of difficulty, and Dubois, the
accoucheur, did not conceal from the Emperor
the fears he entertained. “Think only of the
mother,” he exclaimed with energy; “give her
all your care." Instruments were necessarily
employed—the operation lasted 26 minutes.—
"Napoleon,” sny* Madame Durand, “supported
only five minutes in the apartment —lie let go the
band of the Empress, which lie had till then held
ia his hand, and retired into a dressing room,
pale as death, and scarcely in his senses. The
moment he was informed that the infant was
horn, he rushed into the apartment and flew to
wards liis wife, and folded her in his arms. The
child was seven minutes without giving any signs
of life. Napoleon cast his eyes upon him for an
instant, believed him dead, and never uttered a
word respecting him—he occupied himselfsolely
with the mother. Some drops of Urandy were
blown into the mouth of the infant—his hack was
slightly struck with the hark of the hand, and
he was then wrapped up in warm napkins At
length he uttered a cry, and the Emperor rushed
to embrace him.” It thro seemed that the birth
of a son was the last and best gift that Fortune
had in lier power to bestow on one whom she had

Friday, August 13/A.—Mr. and Indy,
have this day returned from the fulls, and have
given me further interesting particulars of this
magnificent object. They state the whole fill
of water to he not less than 600 feet in four dis
tinct cataracts, all within the space of three
miles. They approached near to each fall, and
£ axed on Its ininiitatablr glut lea with admiration
•ud awe. 1 lie avenue up the river is difficult
and dangeious, hut they surmounted all obatn
<le», and obtained a full satisfactory view of this
giand display of majesty. Their description of
the brilliantly beautiful rainbows that appear in
various situations alaiva the fulls, cao only he
conceived by those familliar with such scenes.—
Mrs 8. took a sketch of the principal fall, and
will pi nimbly lake others as opportunity offers
a. it is net essaty that several should he taken
from different situations, in order to convey a
correct idea ot the object. I tin ther understood
that a gentleman, who has formerly visited the
Niagara Falls, gives these the most unqunliiflrd
preference, for their display of majesty .glory and
grandorr. It certainly appears to ine to lie
worth a voyage across the Atlantic, and richly

leisure.

In addition to these advantages,it is recommend
