AN ORDINANCE
To prevent Slaves frequenting Retail Slrops on
the Sabbath Day.
Sec. 1. Be it Ordained by the City Council of
Augusta, That it shall not be lawful for any Li
censed Retailer of Spirituous Liquors to permit
any slave not owned or hired by him or her, or
lawfully under his or her care or charge, toen
ter hi* or her Retail Shop, or remap) in it or on
the lot attached thereto, at any time during the
Sabbath, or between nine o’cldtk at night and
sun-rise at any other time, without a special tick
et of permission from his or her owner or hirer.
, Sec. And be it further Ordained, That any
; person who may violate any of the provisions of
this Ordinance may be fined in a sum not ex
ceeding one hundred dollars.

RUNAWAY from the subscriber on the night
of the 27tli Sept, a Negro fellow about 36
yens old, although a bright mulatto lie is sun
burnt to a brown mulatto, about 6 feet 4 inches
high bunrh hare, stout neck, scared about the
neck and tluoat, weighing about 1,36 pounds.
He was sol 1 out of Jail for bis tees in Hus ptnee,
under Hie name of Henry ,but his name former.-,
ly was Stepny. He can read and no doubt write
and probably be may change his name, he will

ta to offer a passage to any free .negro,.or
family of free negroes, who may be dis
posed to emigrate' and in case of their
inability to defray the expense of their
own removal, the necessary funds will be
provided for them by the parent Society.
