If any thing coming from, the majority of that committee could bar* au& prised ine, it would be this shameless and un founded assertion. The supposed difficulty of detecting the falsehood or th« statement no doubt gave them confidence t« venture it •' out in this hope they shall be disappointed. So as this charge goes and U intended to convey the idea that there are bills ou the Bank of Ms con in circulation, signed by me as Cashier which have not been fairly registered, it is false’ and the author, w ith all others who assented to this shameless insinuation. |do not hesitate pronounce base and wilful calumniators. The public will be surprised to laarn that the com mittee, to far from having a particle of testimony to support this charge, have mac|e \t fe the face of thq very strongest evident* wfiieli could be adduced l« prove a negative, she .ring its false hood. It Was known to them, that on 4 former occasion, and in answer to this same charge which then Existed only in rumor, 1 had distinct ly stated in the public giisnttes, if theca was a» single bill id circulation signed and issued by me, that did not appear fairly set forth on the hooks of the Bank, that 1 was ready at any mo ment to redeem it in specie. At the same time I requested that the Register might be pqblish ed, offering to pay the expense uiysel£ eve ry bill-holder might have an opportunity to exa mine for themselves. Here then wag a mode, pointed out by myself, by which it dould be ac curately ascertained whether there was “ any bills in circulation which had not been register ed." But it was rejected them, by then, by the Managers of the Bank; and the committee who have so recently had that Register in their poe-f session, with the power so coutel it,have ftilfre fused to afford to the public the opportunity of •xaniining'it and judging for themselves. They knew we I that it would prove the falsehood of their pitiful and base insinuation. But 1 repeat again, their hope to avoid a detection of that* Ismnjf they havi propagated shall be'disappoint ed 1 have applied for, and so soon ~«n lb# Re eister can be obtained, am determined that the Register shall be published ; b f which an impar tial public m»y determine (he truth or falsehood of this accusation. iiS , ROBERT COLLINS, r Feb 18 19 Cplouring for Liqobra for sale by ft.
