It is alleged “ that the register of the bills I*l sued and kept by ii )e t* not correct, and ouehf not to be relied on.” If any tlttng the majonty of that committee could have sur pt.sed.ne, it would be this shameless „„d un (otinded assertion. The supposed difficulty of detecting the falsehood of the statement no doubt gave them confidence to venture il • hut in Hits hijpetbey shall be disappointed. So far a4 this charge goes and is intended to convey the idea that there are bills on the Bank of Ma con m circulation, signed by me as Cashier which have not been fairly registered, it is false' and the author, with all others who assented to fins shameless insinuation. Ido not hesitate to pronounce base and wilful calumniators The public will be surprised to learn that ih’„ com mittee, so far from having a particle of testimony to support this charge, have made it in the faro of the very strongest evidence which could be adduced to prove a negative, shewing i„ fa i se » Itood. It was known to them, that on a former occasion, and in answer to this same charge, winch then existed only-in rumor, 1 had distinct ly stated in the public gaieties, if there was a single bill in circulatfon signed and issued by me, that did not appear fairly set forth on the books of the Bank, that I was ready at any ment to redeem it in specie. At the same time I requested that the Register might be publish ed, offering to pay the expense myselt that eve rv bill-holder might have anopportuoßy to exa mine for themselves. Here then was a mode, pointed out by myself, by which it could be ac curately ascertained whether there was “ any bills in circulation which had not been register ed.’’ But it was rejected them, by then, by the Managers of the Bank ; and the committee who have so reeently had that Register in their pos session, with the power to cotitol it, have still re fused to afford to the public the opportunity of examining it and judging for themselves. They knew well that it would prove the falsehood of their pitiful aud base insinuation. But I repeak again, their hope to avoid a detection of the ca^ knnny (hey have propagated shall be disappoint ed I have applied for, and so soon as the Hje, gister can be obtained, am determined that the Register shall be published ; by which an itnpax tial public may determine the truth or -falsehood of this accusation.
