7. And be it further enacted , That the
justices of the peace of the districts of
said counties are authorised and required,
or either <*f them shall have jurisdiction

lies.
8. And he it further enacted, That il
shall he thl* duty of ihe rons'.abie of s'id
districts, in case any slave violates the
pi "visions (it this act, to apprehend such

•he justices if die peace; whose duty it
shall bn to hear anil determine upon the
H'tilt or innocence of such slave, and in
die event of conviction shall direct the
constable whose doty it shall he to inflict
the punishment pointed nut in the 6 h
senion of this act, and the cost and all le
gal expellees of said trial, shall bn paid
by the owner nr manager, or whose em
ployment they may he in, of all such slave
or slaves that shall so offend against the
law of lie above mentioned counties.
9. Aud be it further enacted, That it
vliall hi: tho duty of said constables to
sP.'Hflt into and prosecute every violation
of this act, and in case lie shall wilfully
and knowingly tail or neglect to do so,
he shall lor every such failure be indicted
and prosecuted before the Superior court,
ami upon conviction, shall pay b fine of
fifty dollars or he imprisoned at *.he discre
tion of the c*>ur», for not less than two not
more than ten days, and pay all costs of
said prosecution.
10. And be it further. enae’ed, Thai
ilie regulation, control and government of
all free persons of colour coming into and
residing in ihe city of Ausnsta, shall be,
and the same are hereby vested in tho city
council: Provided, such regulation, con
trol and government, should not conflict
with the laws now of force in this Stale,
and which does not conflict with the fore
going previsions of this act.
11. And be it further enacted , That all
laws and parts of laws or ordinances mili
tating against this act, be and the same is
wholly repealed.
