Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the state of Geor gia in Central Assembly met , and it is hereby enacted by the authority of Ihe same , That fr»m and after the passage of this act, it shall not be lawful for an}’ slave or free person of colour, to keep a ■h ouse of entertuimneut or to vend goods, wares, or meichandizo, spirjtrius liquors or provisions for their own profit, olhei than what is allowed by the existing laws of-ihis State, within the limits' of Rich mond and Hancock counties. * : 2. And be it further enacted , That n«» slave shall he allowed to hire his, or her lime, fmm his or her owner or manager, nor shall any slavo be allowed to work o» carry on any traffic on Ills or her on n ac count, or for the purpose of procuiing a livelihood or raising money, to pay his or her hire or wages to his or her owner or employer in said coumies; except'such as may he Barbers who shall be permitted ty hite iheir time, and lent shops for carry ing on iheir busines®. 3. And be it further enacted, That it shall not be lawful for any peison having ilie management or ownership of aoy slavo or slaves, to suffer such to hire his o« their own l ine, or go at large seeking em ployment, at the disc r etinn of such slave or slaves, ivhhin the liaii s aforesaid, nor shall it be lawful for any person to hiie any slaves and permit such to work or carry on any traffic on their ofvn account irt any mauuer or way whatsoever in said comities. 4. And be it further enactedi That it shall not be lawful lor any petsoii being the owner or having (lie management or control or who may be renter or leaser of any house ot tenement in said counties [if ] rent the same to any slave or slaves nor permit the same to be occupied by any others than his or her own, or such others as shall at all times be directly un der his or her control for their own bene fit a nd use in all of their transactions of business of troy kind or nature whatsoever. 5, And be it further enacted , That any while persons offending against the provisions of this act, be indicted and prosecuted before ihe Superior Courts for any such offence and on conviction there" of, shall forfeit and pay a fine of fifty dol lars and all cost of said suit, for each and every such violation of this law, one hall to be paid to the informer and pfosecutor, and the other half to be paid lo the In. ferioi court for the use and benefit of said counties. G. And be it further enacted, Thai evety slave or.slaves who shall offend a gainst any of the provisions of ibis act, shalfbe liable to and receive not less than twenty, nor more than fifty lashes, for every timo he or she so offend, to be in flicted by the constable of the district ot any oilier of the c«unty, where such vio lation of the law is committed. 7. And be it further enacted. That the justices of the peace of the districts of said counties are authorised and required, or either them shall have jurisdiction and cognizance of all and every infraction »r vioiation of this act, that shall be com mitted by auv slave or slaves in said coun* lies. 8. And be it further cnticted y That it shall be the duty of the constable of said districts, in case any slave violates the provisions of this act, to apprehend such slave and take him or Iter before one of the justices of the peace; whose duty it shall he to hear and determine upon the guilt or iunnecuce of such slave, and in the event of conviction shall direct the constable whose duty it shall bo to inflict the punishment pointed out in the 6 h section of this act, and the cost and all le gal expences of said trial, shall be paid by the ow ner or manager, or whose em ployment they may he in, of all such slave or slaves (hat shall so offend against the law of he above menirafted counties. 9. Aud be it further enacted , That it shall ho the duty of said constables to search into and prosecute every violation of this act, and in case he shall \Vilfully and knowingly fail or nrglect to do so, he shall for evety such failure be indicted and prosecuted before the Superior court, and upon conviction, shall pay a fine of fifty dollars or be imprisoned at the discre tion of the court,for not less than two dpi more than ten days, and pay all costs of said prosecution. 10. And be it further enae’ed , That the regulation, control and government of all free persons of colour coming into and residing in the city of Augusta, shall be, and the same are hereby vested in the city council: Provided , such regulation, con trol and government, should not conflict with the laws now of force in this State, and which docs not conflict with the fore going provisions of this act. 11. And be it further enacted , That all laws and parts of laws or ordinances mili tating against this act, be and the same is wholly repealed. Assented to, Dec. 24, 1832. NOTICE. House in Virginia, three timet a week and back. rpHIS Line starts'from Salem every Monday, 1 Wednesday and Friday at s o’clock, A. M. nnd arrives at Wythe Court House at 6 o’clock. P. M. the next day. At the same hoar that the Stages leave Salem, they also leave Wythe Court House and arrive at Salon at 5. o’clock P M. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. This Line is so arranged as to correspond in its ar rivals at Wythe Court House, with the arrivals ot the Great Lines leading through the vailey of Virginia.—lt also correspond in its arrival? at Wythe Court House with the arrivals of a tri weekly line running between that place and the Salt Sulphur, the Red Sulphur k White Sulphur Springs in Virginia, which has been lately estab lished.—At Salem it correspond* with the ar rivals of Smith’s Picdment Line, and the Raleigh Line, both of which run three times a week. The Route passsees within a mile of the Pilot Moun tain through Bethnnia Belhabara by Mount Air y, ctosses the Blue Kidge at Ward’s Gnp, goes by Poplar Camp Furnace and the Lead Mtht-s of Wythe, and affords some interesting scenes to those that admire the sublimity of nature. The accommodations of diet, lodging, kc. are excel lent and cheap. The subscriber hesitates not to recommend his teams and '-drivers as first rate. His coaches are most excellent—being newly procured from Troy, New-York Fare through the whole route 6 dollars—way passengers cents a utile.
