AUGUSTA,
WEDNESDAY, JUDY 1.
We have been opening this week an addition
al supply of A’ew Type, principally Job Type,
which now enables us to dispatch the business
of our friends in the very handsomest style.
Come and see.
That thing called news is almost as hard to
find by a poor printer, as money. We have
sought diligently for it to-day; but must be sat
isfied to trust the interest of the occasion to other
matters. We might pick up a few more reports
of people’s being caught in the Western Stages,
on suspicion of robbing the Bank ; but that is
how so common a thing as to excite no further
interest, but to the passenger, whose notes, by
his detention, may lie over, for protest, in Mo
bile or New Orleans. We understand Mr,
O’Meara is not the only one, by half a dozen,
Who has been thus stopped. It is dangerous to
show a big pocket book, and particularly if
'tiiere is much money in it. A fellow, who was
carrying the Darien Bank bills down to the
toother Bank for either himself or others, to be
redeemed or exchanged, might find it conveni
ent to travel with some sort of credentials in
shape of a passport. Such a deposit found
in his possession, would certainly deposit him
within the four walls of a prison for a short
time at least, unless he had the Small Pox
or the Governor’s sign manual, or some oth
er equally well known signature to attest
tits innocence. Travellers had better carry
a little leather pouch stuck in the breech
es pocket and show no swelled pockets eith
er behind or before, if they desire to escape
very scrutinizing investigations into the proba
bilities of their being the men or not. We fear
the Union Convention will be thinly attended
on this account. It would stand the nullifiers
in hand to stop all they could, and any kind of
a pretext with them is sufficient to accomplish
their ends. But we will see by Friday and let
our readers know all about it.
Maj. John M‘Lemore who was brought tu
trial at the last Circuit Court of this district,
(says the Columbia Hive,) for the murder of
Col. Myers, and no verdict by the jury being
agreed to, moved for a discharge on the ground
that a mis-trial was equivalent to an acquittal.
Last Wednesday a decision was given against
the motion by the Appeal Court.
FROM THE NORTH.
The steam packet South Carolina, Captain
Rollins, arrived at Charleston on Saturday
evening last from Norfolk, which port she left
on Tuesday.
The U. 8. friga'e Constitution, Capt. Elliott,
from France, via England, arrived in New
York harbor on Monday night, Mr. Livingston
and family on board. She sailed from Ports
mouth «on the 17th ult. An officer from her
passed through the city of Philadelphia on
Tuesday, with despatches for government.
The Philadelphia Commercial Herald says:
“ Some alarm has been excited by a word or
two dropped, as was said, by General Jackson
lately at the Navy Yard, Washington, lest there
might yet be a rupture between the United
States and France, in reference to the Treaty
of Indemnity. To quiet all fears on this sub
ject, we deem it proper to say that when Mr.
Dickerson, Secretary of the Navy, was in this
eity a few days ago, he expressed himself in the
most emphatic manner, that there would be no
lupture with France; that the President of the
United States and his Cabinet, and the King
of France and his ministers, all alike, felt the
necessity of having the matter settled, and a dis
position to expedite a consummation so devout
ly.wishcd. We also learn that the President
has, within a few days, declared that no want
of a little courtesy on his part should prevent
the adjustment of this matter, and the receipt,
by those to whom it was due, of the five mil
lions of dollars to be paid by France.
All •men arc born without teeth, no man
therefore is justifiable in Biting. The
bachellors of Nashville have grown ar
gumentative in their old age and taken to
the quotation of high authority for their
miss deeds: having lately published their
declaration of indipendence. It commen
ces by a hold travestie of the national state
paper, and draws a most unsavory conclu
sion from the premises. “All men” says
the old vinegar cruets, “are born unmar
ried, ” and therefore they should always
remain so. A very precious sequitur,
this.
