Extract of a letter to the Editor, dated,
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ist July, 1835.
Dear Sir: —The Union Convention met to
day at 10 o’clock, and elected Col. AVootex, of
Wilkes, their President, and Geo. AV. Murray
and Chas. D. Hammond, Secretaries. Alter some
little discussion, the Convention proceeded to
ballot for President and Vice President, when
it appeared that Mr. Van Buren received 150
votes, for President, White 2, and Benton 1.
For Vice President, Col. Johnson received
130, Mr. Rives 19, Forsyth 2, and Rush 1.
To-morrow. I presume, the Convention will
proceed to nominate two persons to fill the va
cancies in Congress occasioned by the resigna
tions of Judge Wayne and Judge Schley.
Great unanimity prevails among our friends
here, and those counties which are not repre
sented in the Convention have generally given
Ussurances that our Union friends there, will
concur in such nominations as shall be made
and such measures as shall be adopted.

Beat this if you can! —We saw two Beets
this morning at Lamback’s, where there are
so many other good things, which weighed 9i
lbs. They were raised in the Garden of James
Primrose, Esq. Also, from the same Garden,
a Cabbage, of the Early York kind, weighing
6 lbs. There were three Beets. The largest
went to New-York this morning, and will help
to dine at least a dozen of their big-bcllicd Ai
dermen on Wednesday next.
To Maidens to make much of time.
Gather the rose buds while you may,
Old time is still a dying,
And this same Hower, that smiles to-day,
To-morrow will be dying!
The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he is getting—
The sooner will his race be run,
For still he wears his setting.
That age is best winch is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer ;
For these soon pass ; and ever worst
Times succeed the former.
Then be not coy, but use your time ;
And while ye may, go marry;
For having lost but once your prime,
You may for ever tarry !
