delighted. '* I knew that they wbuld suit your
taste, it is so correct. I can always tell a woman
of taste from a sloven by the way she is dressed.
Shall I cut off five yards for you 1” “ I really
have not the money, Mr. B ; though 1 admire,
and would like to obtain the lace, 1 cannot do
so at present.” “ Don't say a word about the
money ; I know you are geod for it ; we won't
dispute about it any how.” And B cuts off the
lace, measuring so expertly that the five thumbs
are saved to make a remnant; and as he puts
down the article, neatly folded and wrapped,
he next enquires, “ Can’t you think of any
thing else to day, Mrs. A ? To which Mrs A
replies, “ VV hat is the price of those combs?
Mr. B,” pointing to some gilt backs. “Only
$5 00 ; 1 assure you they are cheaper than they
could be sold for in New York, and they are an
elegant article. Mrs. C bought the fit st two I
sold out of this lot, this morning, for her two
daughters; but I can’t say that they suited their
red , heads so well—they are only fit for black,
or daik brown hair, such as yours —try one ot
them—beautiful!—you can’t imagine how much
better you look! —you have a fine face any how,
and you only want two of these and a set of this
fillagree jewelry to make an ornament to the
ball room—t ie eardrops and broach are S3O 00,
the comb 5, and the lace s—only 40 dollar-. ’ —
do you take them?” “Yes, sir.”—Unhappy
woman! from this moment you have a curse
upon you, and you fear that they who meet will
slay you. Air. D says of you, “ I wonder how
in the world Mrs. A dresses so fine ; her hus
baad is a mechanic, ragged and hard-working,
and Mr. E only pays him one dollar and a half
per day, and when he pays his rent, and for
bread and meat, I don’t see how he catj have
any thing to spare for finery for his wife. If
she comt s by it honestly, I think she had better
have put the children to school with the money. :
Mr, A, in his daily avocations, can only be at
home at meals, and sees nothing but what is ■
right, and depends entirely on his wife’s pru- :
dence.” Mrs. A, finding Mr. B so complaisant, |
does not hesitate, in the course of two or three i
months, to add item after item to the account; I
but Mr. B, by diligent posting every Sunday i
morning, finds that Mrs. A has gone the length '
of her tether, the next little order she sends, he
has not the article, and in a few days sends in
the bill, as he is just going to New York— has
dissolved copartnership— has a note to pay in
Bank, &c. &c. The bill, however, is not paid,
because Mrs. A cannot pay it. The sum allow
ed by A for house expenccs is expended, and
thir account is in arrears to the grocer for su
gar and tea. She would willingly return the
articles, but B would not receive them of course.
After two or three formal calls, formal because
B did not expect Mrs. A to pay from the first,
bnt imagining that A would pay rather than be
sued and put to trouble, he then calls on A.
What can he do—every cent of his earnings is
not enough to feed, clothe, and school his chil
dren ; yet he says he will pay as soon as he can
get the money. B calls ag’ain and insults A—
callsagain and yet again insults him, with in
sinuations of dishonest intentions and enquiries
of “what do you do with your money.” A
cannot explain to every clerk the nature of his
situation, nor even to the clerk’s master, because
it would imply the asking of commisseration.
Summary process, judgment, execution, ca
sa, jail, or benefit of the act follow. Os
what avail are the tears of Mrs. A, or the
gloomy countenance of A, when they hear their
liitle ones begging for bread they have not to
give them; or see their naked little limbs,
burnt brown by the sun as they expose them
selves to it, bare headed, and with naked feet.
This is their day of tribulation and let them
bear it without tears or gloomy countenances,
and the result will be as happy as tl e resolution
that enables them to brave the storm of adver
sity. Let me ask now the sources whence
these two coures spring ? Does not dissipation
and gloomy discontent rise and proceed to
ruinous courses through the rivulets of stupidity
from the prolific firing of ignorance, and what
earthly power could divert the clear stream of
conscious rectitude from the great source of
knowledge which Deity has bestowed upon us.
It is shouted “ the schoolmaster is abroad,”
but he is not abroad. What is the use of art or sci
ence without moral restraint? The Temperance
reformation has done much in ameliorating the
condition of the first class, but it is moral refor
mation that will produce that elevation of
character that alone can preserve and perpetu
ate the pure and holy institutions of our country.

I RENOVATING LIQUID,
RECENT DISCOVER V.
RS. BERNARDS RENOVATING
• LIQUID for extracting all kindsol Oils,
I Paints, Tar, and Grease from the most delicate
i coloured Silks, Satins, Cloths, Bombazines, or
i Velvets, without injuring in the least their Col
our or Texture.
This recent and valuable chemical discovery
■is offered for sale by the subscriber. It almost
; supersedes the necessity ot dying, and the
j scourer’s “Vocation is gone.’ Fifty cents
worth will secure a Bacon Merchant’s breech
es from criticism for 12 months. It acts like a
I charm upon silks of the finest texture, by in
i stantly removing the taints of grease, without
iin the least affecting the fabric itself—the most
inveterate lodgments of wax upon Coat Collars,
j fly before it like dust before a6/ usA. It is no
j Quac/ceiy but the true secundum artem mode of
appearing decent in old clothes at the least im
aginable expense. It is offered to Gentlemen at
50 cents a Phial, and all other sorts of people
can have it at the same price.
No danger need be apprehended in using it
upon the finest and most delicate Silks—nor is it
like the soaps so commonly advertised in our
days, which removing one evil, almost invaria
bly produce another of double size—nor does it
require the preparatory mcansofall other renova
tors—such as hot irons and the like. Only a lit
tle clean water, accordins to the directions, is
. wanting. Oil or Grease of any kind can be ex
tracted from the most delicate coloured carpets,
i without the usual trouble of taking them up. If
used according to the directions, it will at once
’ extract every particle of grease from the finest
Cloth, or most delicate Silks, without injuring
■ in the least the colour or texture.

BEWARE OF DECEPTION!!’.
ATTEMPTS have recently been made by
a house in the City of New Y’ork, to prac
tice one of the most unblushing impositions ever
conceived by the most designing.
Il is know that “Rowand’s Tonic Mixture,”
after an extensive trial of its merits throughout
the country, has proved its usefulness to sifeh
universal satisfaction as a thorough and radical
cure for Fever and Ague, as to have become
identified with the necessities of a great portion
of the inhabitants of the United States.
The unbounded popularity, therefore, that this !
medicine has secured to itself, has excited the <
cupidity of certain no strum-venders of notoriety i
who have dared-to mix up a trash hoping to put it
off upon the ignorant and unwary as the genu- !
ine “Rowand’s Tonic Mixture.”’ For this pur- j
pose they have substituted a fictitious name in I
sound and appearance very similar to the true '
“Row’and’s Tonic Mixture.” The border of I
the envelope has been very closely imitated, and I
one half of its reading matter purloined where- i
by the copyright of the author has been infring- ;
ed; and have without authority and fraudulent- I
ly made useof the names and certificatesof high I
ly respectable individuals, who have testified to i
the value and excellence of the true “Rowand’s i
Tonic Mixture,” attaching the same to the base !
and spurious imitation. This trick cannot sue- I
ceed amongst the earelul and intelligent part '
of the community—but is calculated to deceive
to a dangerous extent the ignorant and uncau- I
tious. Legal proceedings, however, will be im
mediately instituted to punish the fraud, and at
the same time an appeal is earnestly made to
all who may have an opportunity'to expose
the imposture, toextenct their influence in order
to protect distress and sufffering from such inhu
man designs.
N. B. —The genuine “Rowand’s Tonic Mix
ture” may be had of YY t m. J. Hobby, sole agent
for Angusta and its vicinity.
