The New York Common Council has had an
informal meeting, at which it has agreed to
raise a loan of six jnillions, to aid the Insurance
Companies in accmmodating the public.
Castle Garden has been taken as a depot fur
the reception of goods, unclaimed, and of which
the ownership is unknown.
Philadelphia came out nobly in the cause of
distress. Three hundred volunteers of her fire
men were employed to aid the New-York fire
men in extinguishing the burning ruins;
A meeting of the citizens of Philadelphia
was held on Friday last—when, among other
measures, a resolution was adopted to memori
alize Congress for a Government accommoda
tion to the amount of ten millions of dollars.
It is stated that one thousand of the Phila
delphia firemen volunteered togo to New-Yotk.
but could not find conveyances. One hundred
and fifty were left at Trenton, not being able to
procure conveyance across from that place to
the Camden and Amboy Rail Road-
We learn, by letters from Washington City '
that Mr. Taney will probably be nominated
Chief Justice, and it is thought that the senate
will confirm the nomination. Among the im
pressions at Washington is onem favor of the
belief of a pacific settlement of our French dif
ficulties. Among the rumors is the report that
Mr. Tyler will resign his seat in the Senate, if
instructed in a particular way, and that Mr.
Rives will fill the vacancy. Abolition petitions
are treated very cavalierly on all hands, and
stand no chance in the House particularly.
If Argyle is tired walking, and will come to
kheLafayette Course,we will give him some run
ning. He can’t get the SBOO purseon the 4 mile
'flay by running 2 m iles. He will have to streak
it all the way round and keep at it. There are
aeveral four footed gentlemen and ladies here
■that willbe glad to see him. It is thought, Gov.
Hamilton has shaken his nerves very conside
rably. Perhaps a gallant round or two with La
-dy Nashville and Miss Medley might restore
their usual soft play and regular motions.
Come and try. Rumor makes you shy.
More Strangers.— Besides the Norfolk thin
skin hogs, noticed in our last, we saw in the
Ware House of Capt. Cumming, on Thursday
last, two pigs, two geese, and two white turkeys,
from Bremen. They are intended for Dr. Jen
kin* of Louisville, in this State. The spirit of
improvement is abroad—it is not confined to
Rail Roads—every thing partakes of it.
Another Boat Accident.— The Columbus Sen
tinel says: “ The Metemora, commanded by
Captain Smith, on her first trip from Apalachi
cola to this place, was snagged, and in a few’
minutes went to the bottom, with a large cargo
of goods for this place.
Anthracite Brick.— Mr. James Wood, of Ha
verstraw, N. Y. has, says the “North River
Times,” invented a new mode of making brick,
much superior to the kinds in common use. He
makes it by mixing pulverized Schuylkill, or o
ther Anthracite Coal, with clay, whereby it
burns with more facility and become harder
and more impervious to water.
Flour rose to seven and a half dol
lars, at Baltimore, a week ago—(we mean
the flour of commerce, not family flour,)
though 11,665 bbls, were received. At
Pittsburgh, it sold at seven dollars. At
the last named place, five years ago, it was
only three dollars.— Niles' Reg.
