Extract from tlx aaintsiet • B. R. Cuyler, o. o GEXH1ML JACKSO.Y. Wo cbierrc with rrgret the nuny attempt* that are malting to inflame the public mind against tbit well tried hero and patriot. We ahould sup pose that tuch conduct it premature, inasmuch as ttbey cannot bare a full eiew of the ground on Which beaded. We ought to wait with patience till tne whole aflair it developed, when we shall then be enabled to draw our own inference!, and decide who ie culpable. There is no doubt in our mind, that the step# taken by general Jack son were justified in itself by circumstances, un der which be acted. Hia country ordered him to chastise the blood thirsty Seminoles— be pursued them through their forrests and their morasses —at length driven from their own atrong holds, they sought shelter in the forts of die treacher ous Spaniards. Was he to stop short of hit in functions? Was be to permit the savages to se cret themselves in the fortifications of the Span- iards? Was be in fact to suffer those fortifica tions to be garrisoned by an avowed enemy? Was the Spanish authority maintained therein? Were not the resources of Spain appropriated to the support of the Seminoles? Did not the common, dant of Pensacola supply them wifli munitions, provisions, tic? Were not these acts of hostility? and ought not Jackson to bare punished them? Certainly. Be law no redress for the past, or se curity for the future, without tlir taking and bold ing the Spanish posts—Without, the Seminole war would have been a mere farce. The disaffected of all dassci.wbUe, red, and black, would hiva resorted to them as a constant rallying point. Where to plan yjeir schemes, obtain their supplies, and mature their operations; and the vast expenses of the war been without profit. Jackson has de clared war, says some of the wiseacres—On the contrary, the Spanish authorities in Florida acted hostile!/ towards him and the forces under bis command, and he was bound to protect himself —and did so. And shall it be now said, that be cause Jackson baa chastised a covert foe, who was aiding and abetting an open enemy, he has deelar. ed war against Spain? Away with the ridiculous imputation. Jackson has been called amtiliou? So he is—“He is ambitious of doing good; ' v it ambitious of the love of bis country; he is, N, tious of leaving to posterity the legacy uf» , f Hot. In (he Republican of last evening we republished from the Nashville Whig, a dispassionate, and ar gumentative essay on the conduct of general Jackson, relative to the Florida question. In this day’s sheet, another essay on the same subjec^ and from the same pen, will be found, and will be read no doubt by many with great satisfaction. rom to sava Kiras azrcaiicAX. SE1PIPRECK —The sch’r Favorite, Farrin, three days from Savannah, bound to Baltimore, reiurneu yesterday, totally dismasted, having ex- perienceda very severe gale on Saturday hist, in the Gulf Stream, in lat. SI, 40, Ion. 79, 4J, which continued eight hours. We have been furnished with the followiifg extract from tier log-book: October 17, 1818.—These 24 hours commenced wnbbaid gales aiul cloudy, attended with squalls ol ram and a high cross sea from S. E. At 4 r ». look the buiinet off the foresail; at 10 p m. a dis tressing gale, a large sea going, and vessel labor- ing hard, unlit 3ix wheu the gale still increasing split the foresail; we immediately took in the re mains of it, and was setting the balance' reefed mainsail, w hen a sea stuck us and knocked the schooner u low beam cods. We Immediately put else helm up and endeavored to get her before the wind, but to no effect; we Iben hoisted the head of tlie jib, which split as fast as we hoisted; we then deemed it expedient to cut way the main mast, which was done—site would not then fall off nor aright; orders then were given to clear away tlie main mast, and in about 20 minues alter the sch’r partly arigbted, we pumped her out, and rigged up jury-masts, and made sail lor Savannah supposed, that one who was a monarchist in op. pressed and injured- Ireland, could be a republi ’ can, in independent America; interested and pe cuniary motives, may have produced a simulated change; but the same motives would as speedly have produced a recantation.—Our nation is said (by Foreigners) to be easily decc-ind,—that <mr fraternizing principle* admitted all classes, all de nominations, all political apostates, no matter un der what sun they may have been born, or in what creed they m»y have been educated,—vou have presumed upon these dicta, uttered without rea son, and supported without proof: and you too have been deceived. Your lamentations on the unfortunate death of an English Princess, was to derated, because Charity hoped it was the suffer, vngi of a woman, and not love for roval b!ood f that excited your sympT’hies; but charity itself was deceived. The crown that adorned, and the diadem that glittered on the brow of royalty, had bewildered your senses, and you forgot your ac customed prudence —Your youth found but few kindred spirits in s »ir native soil, and govern ment lad enlisted them in her ranks of spies and informers—they had talents, and were fortunate; they had courage, and were protected; you found yourself deserted, and you came to America: you sought promotion at the Bar. but you possessed the chicanery of your profession, and were defi cient in its solid ornaments and its deep hidden lore: you were disappointed, and embarked for New Orleans, from thence to Havana; thb gloomy habit of an inquisitor suited yoursuul, and you an ticipated preferment;—perhaps imagination had already placed you on the lofty throne of the in quisition and the religious victims of your malice Were already writhing in pleasing tor ure before your senses; but here too disappointment met you; tlie lurid glance of the inquisitor was in your eye, but the timid spirit of the apostate was in your heart. You then arrive in Savannah; shall I give you your portrait here? No- humanity pleads for you, and charity draws the veil over your trices. FKANKUN. Port of Norfolk, October 12.
