Private letters from Alabama state, that
a codrt was at that time sitting (irth Sep
tember) at Fort Claiborne, in Monroo
county, a spot which, anti! the late Indian
war, was scarcely known to white people,
except the lew who lived among the In
dians. It is qn the banks nf the Alaba
ma, about sixty miles above Fort StodderC.
Two years ago there was but a single ca- •
bin on the spot where the town now stands,
and it is computed that the town now con
tains twerty-seven hundred inhabitants.
Although the whole of the land still be
longs to the Indian nation, there are acoort
house and gaol, as well as a variety of pri
vate buildings, erected for the purposes of
public justice and of domestic comfort;
and, it is with regret it is stated, that the
gaol was crowded with criminals, some
of whose cases were ol a highly interesting
nature. An Indian, for one, had been in
dicted for the murder of a white man, and
6 or 8 white men had been indicted for
having (as the reader may remember to
have seen it stated some time ago) murder
ed several Indian prisoners, who were shot
and killed when bound, and passing under
the protection of a guard from.Fort Clai
borne to Fort Montgomery. This is a
crime, if established, calling for all the
energy of the law. A disposition is said
to prevail among the people, favorable to
the repression of such outrages, and for the
prosecution of every species of offence
against the laws and against the public
peace. These are ohjects which we had
rather see effected by civil than by milita
ry law.—ib.
A letter received in this city from a gen
tleman living at Alexandria, at the fans of
Red river, in Louisiana, under date of 10th
September, gives a flattering view of the
rapidly improving state of that country.—
“Lands aud town lots,” the writer says,
“have risen beyond all expectation. We
have now at Alexandria twenty mercan
tile establishments, whose imports may be
estimated at from 250 to 300,000 dollars
per annum. The crops of this parish will
this year amount to about four hendred
thousand dollars, at the present price ot
cotton: they are now very promising, and
our parish generally enjoying unusual
prosperity. Land, which was bought in
1806 at 50 cents per acre, has recently
been sold, in a tract of 800 acres, at 28
dollars per acre.”—tft. —
