Ml Pi V IUXKVV KENTUCKY. . . The Kentucky Reporter, ot tlus UihuU has the following remarks: from which it would op- pear, that the above bank bae Hopped ape paytnenu:—Son. HtpuMUm*. — When we ipokexo highly in favor of thii institution in our la>r, little did we ex pect, that inftod day* it woald follow tin example ol the banka of Cindnnatii—ycl such u thefact,‘to (he otter a»tot:i»h:n<-nt of every peraonin (hi* place. Nothing could exceed UteaHonishment andiud'gna tion, which the Hews of the event exuiled here. A meeting of the citizen* of the town and county waa held at the 'court boose on Saturday, and a committee ap pointed to enquire into the causes of the suspension, and report to another in<-eti> g on Saturday evening next. Until that committee, shall have reported, ami the -bank have had time to publish it*justifica tion, we shall forbear to comment—One of the editors of this paper being nominat ed on the committee appointed on Satur day, it would be premature to enter upon the subject at present. We were entirely cnrrect, as we still believe, in the statement made last week, that the bank of Kentucky is completely meet all the demands upon her; she ia rftt at present, under any necessity ol •topping specie payment*. We derive this information from sources which place its correctness above suspicion: and a deduction we made from it, was tiie only one, wniili we could make, without im peaching her character, anil libelling the directory. The branch of the Kentucky bank at this place, was not le»s astonished and mortified than the people. The whole di rectory wished to t>« on with specie pay ments, which they declared the complete ability of their bank to do; and said they would resign if not permitted. We uii- (hj^tarid the United Siutes’ Branch in this town, very readily agreed to afford every facility necessary to the resumption of specie payments; every indulgence anil accommodation asked by the Bank of Kentucky was promptly acceded to. The Farmers’ and Mechanic*’ flank, or new Independent Hank of this place, came to the resolution immediately, that they would continue to pay specie. They sav it is impossible to prevent them from do ing an. a* they have a much larger amount of specie on hand than of notes in circula tion; and as they are determined to pay to the last dollar, and cease to is-ue pa per, rather than not redeem tL Such i course is highly honorable to that hank, may the directors persevere in it, and may’ they receive the support which fair dealing and-good faith deserve. From the Philadelphia Freeman'* Journal, Sin i ntl THE MINT. It is respectfully submitted to congress, whether, instead of removing the Mint o( the United States from Philadelphia to Washington, it would not be advisable to extend the sphere of its usefulness, as it ^certainly is now inadequate to re-coin specie to the extent requisite for such large and populous country, by erectin'; branches of it in Boston, New-Yorlc, Balti more, Washington City. Charleston, Nevv- Orleans, Lexington, and Pittsburgh. Much foreign coin is making its way in to the United States, which will not pass current, and, until it is re-coined, is of no use as a circulating medium. We understand that no less a sum than 60,000 Chilian dollars, large pieces ol ■tamped silver, have recently been receiv ed in no one investiineut. Should the capacity of the Mint be in creased, very much of the precious metals which would otherwise remain in bullion, or in a state similar to bullion, would b«- rendered more active and serviceable in the shape of American coin*. THURSDAY EVENING, Dcrsaata 17, ISIS. There waa a report abroad in the commcrcia 1 world, this morning, of a short arrival from Liver- -oolat New-Yoik, which brought accounts of a very great deprea-u n in the price of cotton—thi waa Sad to hat c reached here via Cliarlealou, from New York. After tiacing the report through all its ramifies cions, wi found it to have sprung from a letter received by one of our most respectable cummer, cial houses, who liad it from a correspondent in Charleston, stating the falling of cotton in Eng. land, but yet gave it a. a mere report, not vouching for the correctness id it. We would here remark, that the gentleman in whose puueati'in the information is, puts but lit. tie,or no reliance in die tcport.—We therefore dunk no cr-dit should be attached to* H— as this may be a commercial ir.ck for speculative purpos es. This estate is now restricted from the planting of rice under a spe cial contract with the corporation of the city of Savannah, but from the experiments that have been made in sugar cane, cotton, corn, wheat, and other small grains. This land is found well suited for the cultivation of all those great staple commodities In the vicinity of the roost flour ishing city in the southern states, this land may be mo*t profitably used in rearing aud feeding of stock of all kinds, by the cultivation of grasses, turnips, carrots, and various other legumes, for the fattenim* of cattle and sheep, foi which the market of Savannah affords a ready demand, and constant consumption, and which must encrease yearly with the growing prosperity of the city.— This valuable property poss^ss^s mam other ad- vai tages, from its contiguity to the city of Savan nah, and more particularly as connected with the navigation of the river, from Fire fathom Hole to town, where vessels of more than 12 feet draught of water are precluded from loading at the city, in consequence o! the shallowness of the water in the front river channel. On the back river, and immediately opposite the town, this property con- 4-.ins a front, upon which wharves and warehouses may be easily constructed, for the reception of kings of produce coming down the the back ex driver, (which is the main branch of Savannah riv er) or, by the simple operation of a can el of | of a mile, might connect the back river navigation with the barbor of Savannah, and from which ships drawing IS feet water can proceed to sea without any obstuctidn. For the erection of machinery, either by water or steam power, this pot pertv is peculiarly well situated, from the facility of making commodious basins for the security and reception of timber, and iif easy export, either from the front or bad: river. Founding mills for rice may be advantageously connected with such machi nery. (CT Should this property noi be sokl or leased fur a term of yean, on or before the 15th day of January next, the whole will be exposed to pub lic sale on that day, at the Exchange, in this city, in fields of from 10 to t5 acres, agreeable to a plan which will then be submitted to the public.
