SIR—Since I have been elatfoned-onthts
iiltnMv important information has berid Jod-
ged with me respecting theconduct of Mr
Joshua Appleby,a resident of. this place,
in relation to the sale of certain Spanish
vessels, prises to the Colombian armed
schr. Centiila. The informeliohobtainctl,
I embrace the ftryl npporfimtty ofcoutmu J
mealing to you, and trust that the conduct 1
Kara pursued, in consequence, .svHrmcet
your approbation. Tin the 38th instau%the
sloop Cornelia, Capt, Ripley,.afrived'ln this
harbour from Cape Ftonda. -Byoncor her
crew iwa* informed, that ho was acquain
ted with tnany facts relative to the wreckiug
and sole of two Spanish vessels, prixes to
the Centiila. Oil enquiry, I ascertained
that the Cornelia sailed from Thompson's
Island -on Sunday the 2SIU of May, with
Mr. ,J. Appleby asa passenger. ’On her
arrivaf here, * she . found the Centiila and
another armed schooner," with.two Spanish
schooners tbeir prizes.- In passing tbe
Centiila, the Cornelia was hailed,'arid fiTe
quest made to Mr. Appleby to .come on
board. His reply was, that he would tin so
directly; and on his'leaving the Chrhelia,
be immediately proceeded on boahl thtf
Centiila. During the might of the 27tli of
May, one ol these prizes got under way i pf
this vessel, a capt Paint and another ■ man,
both at the time in-tho employ of Mr. - Ap
pleby,- were tbe pilots. In • the morning of
the'2Sth, tbh Other price also got. tiwjer
way in charge of. a persbty turned Statia,
tvpo was also in tbe employ of Mr. Apple
by. Soon after the lattervesseh t he Corne
lia, made sail for the Hay of Honda, and
had not proceeded more than 4 or 5 miles,
before the prize schr, wax seen to come to,
and the seliy. Polly, a vessel.helonging to
Mr. Appleby,kncltor dear.her;.boats were
ala; seep passing constantly between tbe
vessels. - Returning Jo -this place on the
same day,bv tbe passage inside of the Keys,
the Cornelia passed near tbe stems of the
prize schr. and the Polly, then lashed along
side of each other, and the cargo of tbe for
mer was seen transferred to the latter ves
set; The nest day the Cornelia proceeded
towards CaryiforcTs Reef. _ .In passing Jicy
Vacas (properly so cslled) the masts and
yards’of the other prize schr. were distinct
ly seen over the land, with tierjr appear
ance of the vessel’s being on shore. H «v-
ing received this information, rind deeming
it important to make yoo acquainted with
it, I was anxious (hat Mr. Appleby should
be apprised uf my lntenrfon, thereby giving
him an opportunity to exprierate himself or
explain bis motives.. In the pretence of
capt. Ripley, his mate, and itie individual
from whom I received the intelligence,-
he admitted its correctness, and further
stated,(hat he believed tbe vessels trere run
on shore intentionally.
In a subsequent cor, versation,to which there
were no witnesses, on th? asking him-whe-
ther he had purchased these prize vessels,
before they sailed from this harbour, he re
plied that he had not, blit. confessed that
he told thq prize-masters or some persons
concerned, (bathe could purchase them if.
they were wrecked. There is no doubt
but considerable intrit course was 'maintain
ed between the captain o) the Centiila and
Mr. Appleby, at Thompson’s Island, from
Which they both sailed an the 23d uk,. It
may not be improper to remark here, that
the- sloop .'Ocean, one of Vhe vessels which
received the cargo of the brig lately wreck
ed in this vicinity, was at Thompson’s Isl
and, at the time of the Centiila and Mr,

he was so unfortunate as to employ for his
