We also deem ft necessary that the Na

This has been folly exemplified by the

night, and that she had been thrown over
board ! Shocked at the account, she gave
vent to her feelings in shrieks and tc irs,
until she was told by the captain that ifslte
did not retrain, she would be thrown over
bnaidalto! A similar threat was several
times afterwards made use of to compel
her to yield obedience to the cominauds of
the e plain. ,
On the arrival of the ship at New York,
and on the doctor’s visiting her, an errone
ous name was given for the girl, and short,
ly after a woman canto on board, who she
supposed lo be the wife of the captain, as
they greeted each other with kisses, and o
Iher indications of attachment; but whom
she afterwards found to be an indifferent
character, who passed by the name of Kit
Maguire, alias Kit White, alias Kit Parish.
Pointing to the little gilt and addressing
himself to the woman, the captain said,
there was a very rich girl whom she wish
ed her to take, snd take cate oh At first
the girl objected accompanying her, but the
throat of throwing her overboard produced
a compliance, and she lolluwed her to th-
biRse ofa man named Anderson, who keeps
house of U't very g. >od character, and from
this to some others in no belter credit.
From New York she was taken by this
woman to Philadelphia, where they stopped
for a time at the aign of the Swan, in Third
street. There A carriage *a» procured, in
which she was brought ! part of the way
to \his place. After leaving the.tavamLlbc
woman alarmed the fears or the ^B^y
threatening to convey her to a place ddati
gcr, but on her beginning to weep she con
suled and encouraged he; by a better ac
ount of her purposes Somewhat beyond
Chester the carriage was discharged, and
dearborn waggon procured, in which they
patsed on to within a ahort distance oi the
Bed Lion Tavern, about ten miles below
this place, which she was told was an Asy
lum for Orphans’ with directions that upoig
the ringing of a bell, she would go to the 1
house, and that the waggon wduld won re
turn. . There she remained until the felt
uncomfortably cold, and until she thought
she heard a, bell, when she went to the
house, and enquired if it was an Asylum.—
A gentleman who was coming on to New
Castle, happened to be at the tavern about
the time she made the enquiry, and brought
her up.
Several gentlemen went in pursuit of the
woman, who had with her a black boy, who
had belonged to the girl’s father, and had
accompanied her mother, and whom, it was
thought probable, she would attempt to sell
Such was the story she had told to the
knowing ones of New Castle, at the time
we went there; nod such were the impres
sions which her story had made; when up
on the arrival of the ateam boat, the Cap-
tain led by curiosity, perhaps to visit her,
ani) hear her tale, Sa/i/iened to recollect that
he had seen her before, and that her mo
iher was liring in Philadelphia; whereupon
the took passage on board and returned to
the city to seek after other adventure!.
What could have induced her to play
such s singular hoax upon tho natives is. a
matter of no little curiosity, but with res
pect to which, it is not likely that any satis
factory information will be furnished.
