The foregoinginteltigence ia not only carrobant
ed, but a Will more fa* orable aspect of the sffsin of
Spa n, presented by the following note from the
American Consul, at Malaga, presented to Capt.
Ellis, just on the ere of bie departure.—"News lies
just reached uatlist Reigo after giving the French
a complete heating in the streets of Jaen, leasing
f00 of them dead, betides wounded, pnceeded
on his march and was in a village called La Caro
lina, rapidly marching towards Madrid ) and was
in expectation of joining with Martin, t'he Empe-
Cinadot and but little doubt remains that he iijt
this moment within a few leagura of the capital
of Spain. The authorities of this place, spread
a report two diys since, that he war captured, but
it was merely to deceive the ignorant, and keep
alive the hopes of the Servile-, more properly
called the Banr i'li of Spam If the goiernment
in Cadia remain firm a very short time longer, the
face of affairs in this unhappy country will wear a
different aspect, and Europe may hire to thank
Spain for asriog all the continent from despotism
worse than death. The conduct of Riego while
in this place, hat. been reported in the. Gibraltar
Chronicle in a base and shameful light, and false
in every respect. He acted like a gallant soldier
and a firm unshaken putrid, and among all the
Generals in Spain, he ha* roved himself capable
of acting for his unfortunate country in tbe true
style ol the old Roman*’’
The editor of the New York Commercid Ad
vertiser remarking on tbe above says—"Should
these accounts prove true, the success of lliego,
and his movements into the heart of the country,
will be of powerful advice to the cause of the
constitution- It will revive the (looping spirits of
the patriots, and possibly create a diversion of a
portion of tbe French forces before Cadu. The
French division which entered Malaga, was un
questionably to join the main army when the con-
slitutional forces should have been cleared from
Grenada t and a retrograde march upon Madrid,
will not tend to forward tbe opentiona against Ca-
dia. The government of Cadia have only to hold
out a few weeka longer, and the French wonld
be left to begin their work anew, at the com-
mencement of another season.
“Jacn, where the battle is said to have taken
place, ia 80 miles frrm Malaga. The French left
a garrison there, which was probably attacked
suddenly by Riego. This town ia tbe capital of o
district of the tame name, ritaated on a branch of
the Goada'quirer. It is surrounded with walls,
and wu formerly defended by come nmpartr,
towers, end a critic. It ia tolerably .large, and
contains soon beautiful churches and convents,

Montreal,-Sept. S,
On Sunday the 20th ot July last, as Mias
Sophronia Williams was returning home
from Church in the aftemooR, in the Town
ship of Eaton, a Bear was . discovered fol
lowing her, of which she was not aware un
til alarmed by the cries of Mr Ansell Mitch
ell, Mr. A. Williams, Mr. Bagley and o
titers. Miss Williams ran and succeeded
in getting to her father’s-house without a-
ny injury, except being very much fright
ened. The above mentioned persons pur
sued the Bear with one gun and nue axe,
and having come up with him, fired at him,
and by the blood which followed their shot,
imagined they had inflicted a mortal wound,
but the Bear making off, they continued
their pursuit; their gun had lost its lock,
and was therefore useless. Mr, Mitchell
seived the axe out of another person’s hand,
and being swifter than the rest pursued him
alone. He was advised not to attack (be
ing a he Bear) until the rest came up, but
Mr. M. not fearing any danger, was soon
out of their sight, and coming up with him
in the act of going over a log, struck him
on the rump with the head of the axe. The
Bear, not receiving any particular injury,
threw himself over the log. Mr. M. follow,
ed, and struck him again on the head with
the axe-head, which broughthim down, but
when Mr. M. was about to repeat the blow,
he rose up seized him'near the left shoulder
with one paw, seized his hand with his
mouth, began biting and tearing hi* arm,
and throwing himself on his back a ttempt
ed to pull Mr M. down upon, bin, who
seeing his object jumped with ail his force
past the bear’s head, and as he prepared
for another gripe, twitched his'trm out c ~
his mouth, which tore off part ol his flesh .
he then jumped over the log, in the oct oi
doing which, the bear made a blow at him
with his paw, which only tore his trowsers.
Tbe beat then retreated, and Mr. M. wait
ed the arrival of the rest of the party, when
they concluded to pursue him no farther
till next morning, as it was then nearly dark
The next morning a party went in search
of, and succeeded in killing him, after hav
ing put seven shots into hi* body. He mea
sured nearly six feet in length, and full
nine inches across his. head from car to ear.
We are happy to state that Mr. Mitchell
is in a fair way to .recover.
