PLAIN FACTS.
As attempts are mode to prove that the
spurious ticket published in the American

at a meeting at which General Robert Swap

and Abraham Stigg, Secretary, a few facts
susceptible of the clearest proof, will set the
matter in its true light.
The nominating committee, as they are
accustomed to do at the annual public mee

chairman, and Effingham Schieffclin, Esq.
Secretary, which appointment was confirm*

Ur. M. to make tea equal to that imported from

heard crying “ it it not seven o'clock ”
The reading of the report was suspended,
and Mr. Anthony sat quietly in the chair
nntil the hour of seven was announced.
Mr. Schieffclin then commenced reading
the address, occasionally interrupted by the
preconcerted roise of the factfonists. The
address was declared to be adopted, and was
so adopted by a decided majority. When
the ticket was read, the noise wa* repeated.
Gen. Swartwout standing at that period

Mr. Anthony took it and attempted to read
the natnet, but his voice was Browned in
the noise and clamour or those opposed to
it. The regularly nominated picket as
printed above, was then submitted to the
meeting, and was pronounced by the chair
man to be carried. A motion was then
made to adjourn and was also pronounced
to be carried, and the chairman left the
chair.
In a short time afterwards Mr. Authony
and Mr. Schieffclin came downn to my
office with the address and proceedings,
authorising me to attach their names to
them as Chairman and Secrcctary. This I
promised to do, but in the hurry of setting
up so much matter at a late haur, their
names were negligently omitted. The o
mission was my fault, not theirs.
To prove beyond any doubt or cavil that
General Swartwout was not chairman of
that meeting nor Abraham Stagg,Secretary,
it is only necessary to say, and I challenge
denial,that General Swartwout assisted Mr.
Anthony long after he was in the chair to
keep order, and hundreds head him say
"order gentlemen, order t Ut the firoeeed
ingt go on ; he i* a good chairman." I was
near Abraham Btagg who was on the left
of the chair, and heard him say "for
Heaven’s take gentlemen keeft order/ let ut
firoeeed quietly ( you have got a good man
t'n the chair i I woe oftftotcdto hit afi/mint-
