about 11 leagues from Principe, Captt. Driggs snd
Htigb being ■ considerable distance before their
cotnptr.iout, after passing an angle in the road and
out of sight nf them, they were attacked by three
men who rushed out of the woods, and turned
;be Pack hones before they were observed. On
being thus stopped, the two gentlemen diranun-
led and prepared for defence. Each of tbe rob
ber* was armed with a carbine, machete and a
knife, and observing the gentlemen taking out
their pistoh, one ofthe robbers fired at Capta'm
Dngga and wounded him in ttie side, but not se

drew a pistol sod shot .another of tbe robbers,
wbo fell and expired- Tha third robber was in
the set of shooting at Driggs, when tbe other tra-

gentlemen that bad overtaken them on the toad,
when seeing so many, the Allow sprang into the
woods and was raitnang off, when one ofthe Spa

dead near tbe road, being of opinion that if the
third bad not been killed, be mutt have been se

of five minute*.

ANSWER.
Hermitage, 21*1 Sefit. 1823.
Dear Sin: Your letter of yesterday has
reached me, stating it to be the desire. of
many members of the Legislature mat my
name be proposed for the appointment of
Senator to Congress. It is vety true
as you remark, that I have not only said
but have, I believe, through life, acted up
on the principle, that office, m. a Repubii
can government like ours, should not be
solicited, uor yet, when conferred, declined
—stiil I would suggest to my friends, whe.
ther they ought not to excuse me from ac
cepting (he appointment they have propos
ed. There, are many better qualified to
meet the fatigues of the journey than my
self, and on whose services a reliance, for a
time to come, with a piospect of becoming
better as they advance, might be safely re
posed; whereas, from health impaired, ynd
advancing.age, neither the one nor the oth
er could be calculated on from me; and,
besides, it might be thought—-nay, would
be said, that my State had conferred it up-
on me, and that it had been soughtfpr, too,
by me, with a view to other objects and for
other purposes, which are at present pend
ing befor. the nation. I have,, therefore,
earnestly to request my friends and beg ol
you, not to press me to an acceptance ol
the appointment. If appointed, I could
not decline: and yet, in accepting, I
Should do great violence to my wishes,
and to my feelings. Tho length of
time I have passed in public service, au
thorises me to make this request, which,
with my friends, I trust, will be considered
reasonable and proper.
With great regard, I am, very respect
fully yours,
ANDREW JACKSON.
