next Preaidenlt— Were we to judge from
a communication signed A. in the Star of
21st Nov, it would seem that Mr. Calh un’e
friends were much the must numerous in
the legislature, but the fact is unquestion
ably the reverse. In the election of Speak
er to. the House of Commons the Presided,
list question was not spoken of by more
than half a d«zenpersons, but the election
turned on the persons! popularity or indi
vidual influence of the candidates. Mr
Moore being decidedly for Mr. Calhoun,
had the Presidential question been connect
cd with the election, Mr. Strange would
greatly have outnumbered him—There
can br no doubt but thgt both Houses are
decidedly for Mr. Crawford, and if any
question should be introduced during the
session by way of trying tbe strength of.
parties, it will be found that North Carolina
will' give the Crawford ticket a much
greater majority than even Georgia did in
her recent election.

Morth Carolina Gold.—We were shown,
a fen days since, by Benjamin G. Barker,
Esq. a lump of virgin-gold, in its natural
state, which weighed four hundred penny
weights. It was procured in Cabarrus, and
is, probably, on account of ha purity, bril
liatKy,and shape, the handsomest specimen
of North Carolina gold that has yet been
found. Mr. Baikcr intends to take it with
him to New-York, that the incredulous in
that city may have ocular proof, tfiat pure
gold in masses, is actually*found in this
