THURSDAY EVENING, Jaubaiit 8, 1824.
|fj“ In. consequence of uot receiving
our usual supply of printing paper, which
is momently looked for, we are compelled
to issue the Republican to day, in its pre
sent shape.
(£j* By the stoop Herald, arrived this morning
from Charleston, we have received the papers of
that city of yesterday morning. They furnish no-
"filing new.
Eighth of January 1815.
This day, nine year* ago, it “pleased the Al
mighty ,to grant to the arms of the United States,”
a mpst important and signal victory, over the then
cnemksof Republican America, who had dared to
polute with their foul footsteps the “land of the
t)ee anti the home of the brave,” having for their
motto “Beauty and Booty.” It was then, that
the intriped and ever to be revered, ANDREW
JACKSON and his brave companions of the West
drove from before the hasty intrenchments of
New Orleans, with the violence of a whirlwind
twelve thousand of the best troops, that England
could boast of. This victory in its effects, is one
of the most important, that ever occurred to this
Country, since the capitulation of Cornwallis. It
saved the Southern states from destruction, and
placed a brilliant seal to the war of 1812. What
* precious! thrice glorious recollection! Re who
docs hot feci it, is any thing but a good Ameri
can. Honor to the man who has “filled the mea
sure of his country’s glory .’’--Peace and glory be
upon his he*d.

last night to fire the city by the application ofebm-
bu.iables to the stores on Moore’s wharf near the
Exchange; which the humidity of the weather
probably extinguished,
TO CAPTAIN JAMES BIDDLE.
Sir—The crew of the U. S. frigate Congress,
unanimously solicit yoUr acceptance of their sin
cere thanks, for your affectionate and impartial
eondtxf toward* them during the time they had
the honor of being under your command.
Not being favored with an opportunity of expres-
•big their sentiments personally, they avail them
selves of the public prints, assuring you at the
•ante time, that they remain, with sincere regard.
Your most devoted,
Humble servant!.
THE CREW.
Pforffilk, Dec. 24, 1823.
Disappointed Love.—An interesting young wo.
Sian, about 23, named Frances Taylor, was arrest,
ed in London, in November, for an attempt at mur
der. A young man had paid his addresses to her
Tor twoyears, but hesringaome slight reports of her
wrote her a letter on the subject, which she an
swered, and afterwards borrowed a pistol; and
learned the use of it, under a specious pretence
then repaired to her lover’s shop, ana fired a
charge of shot into his face. The wounds were
sol considered fatal. The correspondence be
tween the parties would amuse such as might wish
to study precedents in similar cases.
A letter from Cadis says, under date of Oct 16.
•It is now-placed beyond doubt, that the Duke
U’Angouleide pined over AbUbal, Morilto, Balias-
teros, and Vali*campa, before he left France, by
tJ|t« instrumentality of.Dorf JuCan Sanchez,”
Office /ft!firing.—It 13 said that there are
upwards of 300 applicants for the office of
Flour Inspector for the city of Philadel
phia.
Captain James Reiley; celebrated for lits
adventures among the Arabs, in the deserte
of Africa, is a member of the Ohio Lcgis-
iatuac, now in session.
Mr. Brown, tho .American minister to
France, has arrived at Philadelphia, on his
way to New York, where lie -will embark
on board the sloop of war Caync, lor Havre.
CONGRESS.
Tho congressional proceedings, continue,
in a great measure, devoid of interest. In
both Houses, on tho 29th ult resolutions to
enquire into tho expediency of establishing
a navy yard at Charleston, were introduc
ed. Two resolutions were added in tho
Senate, to the numbor already introduced,
for amendments to the constitution, so far
as relates to tho election of President and
Vice President, which were referred to
tho committee on tho subject. In the
House, Mr, Floyd introduce a resolution
to enquire into the expediency of occupy,
ing the Columbia 01 Oregon river, and to
regulate the intercourse with tho Indian
Tribes.— Georgian.
PORTO RICO.
Extract of a letter to the Editots of the Boston
Palladium, dated
“Porto Rictf, Dec. 6.—During tho last
week there arrived at this.Island, an Eng
lish frigate, a French frigato and a Danish
sloop of war. That from Franco brought
intelligence of the chango in Spain, and an
order for a corresponding change in all the
Spanish settlements, which was complied
with here in one hour alter it was divulg
ed. Wo had a procession Id the Cathedral,
where a grand Te Dcum was performed—
This was followed by a general salute from
tho batteries atid shipping—But the people
did not seem satisfied, and appear to grow
more restive every day. The frigates have
not yet left, port, but will in a day or two.
“There was an arrival from the Main a
few days since of tho famous Colombian
corvette privateer Oronokc, which was tak
en possession of by the crew on the 1st inst
at St. Croix, brought into this place and
given tap to the Spanish authorities. It is
feared tho captain and other officers were
murdered. The crew give very contradic
tory accounts—Somo of them say the offi
cers were on shore, others that they put
them on shore, and deny having killed them.
She came in under tho command of the
boatswain’s mate, and has much money and
many valuable articles on board, particular
ly the property of a Spanish Duke, who
was on board a vessel captured off Cadiz.
Much to my astonishment they are allow
ed to go at large, and dispose of the proper
ty as they please. They consist of persons
of almost ail nations. The privateer cap
tured, a short time since, the schr Octavian,
hound to Trinidad, as the privateersmen
say. They put 0 prize crew on board, who
were afterwards thrown overboard, and tho
vessel retaken and brought into Mayaguez.
“The examination of the crew of the O-
ronoke will take place in a few days,
“We have just' returned from a Grand
Naval Ball and Entertainment, given on
board the English and French trigates. *
which were quite crowded.’"
New York, Dec. 28,
FROM TENERIFFE.
Capt. Reeve, of the ship Virginia, in
forms us, that on tho 28lh of. October,
while lying off and on the port of Oratavo,
in quarantine, was boarded by a private
armed Colombian ship; after examining
the ship’s papers, took out the pilot, he
being a Spaniard, belonging to port Orata-
vo. The boarding officer informed me
they had a few days previous captured tho
American schr Sally, Clark, of Cloucester,
and. ordered her for Laguira, with 7s pipes
of wine on board, taken in at Oratavo; they
put apprize crew of four men on board at
the time of the capture of the schooner,
three Spaniards, (laborers) belonging to
Oratavo, whom they ordered for Laguira
in the schooner. The tollowing night the
Spaniards rose upon the prize crew, and
murdered them, leaving Capt Clark the
only survivor on board; took the schooner’s
boat, and got safe on shore at Teneriffe.—
The schooner afterwards was fallen in with
by the ship, and ordered again for Laguira.
John Pauly a native of Baltimore, was the
prizeraaster who was murdered.
About the loth of November, a French
frigate arrived at Teneriffe, with a Gover
nor from Cadiz on board, to restore the old
order of things m the Canary Islands, which
created much confusion and bustle among
the inhabitants of Teneriffe.
Among the passengers in the steamboat
Richmond, arrived last night, is a distin
guished female personage; making a tour of
this country; she is a native of Upper Egypt,
and believed'to be of one of the first fami
lies in that part of the world. Her name
we have not learnt, as she does not speak
the English language, a circumstance
much to be regretted, as we understand she
came by way of Smyrna, in. Greece, and
might,, if understood, have furnished some
interesting matter from the! quarter. Ano
ther source of regret is, that tho literature
and science ofour country have not yet iiecn
able to translate the testimonials of birth
and standing which accompany this distin
guished foreigner.

A Curiosity. For four or five months past
a constant noiso from rats was heard from
a particular spot under the floor of Mr, S.
Hays’ shop, in this borough. One day last
week, the boys took up the floor, in order
to destroy their nest, where they found four
rats, about half grown, firmly held together
by thoir tails, which kept them from mov
ing, as they could not all agree upon going
ono course. Their tails were so complete
ly knotted together, close up to their rumps,
that one of them could not escape from the
other without losing his tail, which it appear*
ed on examination- one had done, os there -
were five tails and but four rats.
A young girl from the country, lately
on a visit to a Mr. H———, a Quaker wa3
f revailed on to accompany him to meeting.
I happened to be a silent one ; none of the
brethern being moved by the Spirit to ut
ter a syllable. When Mr. II -left the
meeting-house with.hit young lricnd, ho
asked her—“ How dost thee like tho meet
ing?” to which she pettishly replied—
* Like it l Why I can sec no sense in it—to
go and sit for whole hours together without
-speaking a word—it is enough to kill the
Devil P “ Yea mydear.” rejoined the
Quaker,« that is just what wo want.’;
Dr. Johnson remarked of a ccriiu politi
cal ccoundrcl of his day :—“ He may do
very well as ho long as he can outrun his
character; hut the moment his character
gets up with him it is all over.”
IMPROMPTU.
On seeing in the papers the Marriage of John Cot*

fending the Brig Patriot, against the Pirates, to
