We have since heard with great satisfaction, that the project for a colonial set tlement on the banks of Ohio, or Mississippi, is in great forwardness, and that the central board of the society in Philadelphia is composed of . Messrs. Garnier, (de Saintes) president, Josh. Martin, treasurer, R. S. Parmcntier, secretary', Dirat, Censeur.—Democratic Press. From the National Ativocat' of the 20th inst. ■ The following correspondence, which passed between lord Exmouth and William Shaler, esq. consul general at Algiers, does honor to both parties. The conduct of Mr.'Snaler was dictated by that humanity which lias hitherto in every instance marked the conduct of Ameri can officers. The acknowledgement of it by lord Ex- moui!, reflects great credit on the feelings of his lordship, ant!the spirit of justice which actuated him. We are happy to remark this good understanding and unpreju diced regard exercised between the officers of England and'‘America; and we trust they may long continue to vie in acts of generosity and magnanimity with each other. Whether in a day of peace or that of war, the hostility of governments should never operate to pre vent those acts of humanity which always shed lustre on those who confer them. LORD F.XMOITH TO WIT.LIAM SHALKR. Qkesr. Charlotte, Bay of Algiers, 2d September, 1816. S;a—Mr. M'Donnc'J having stated to me your extreme kindness and attention to him during the period of his cruel boiifinement by the dey of Algiers, 1 feel it to be no moFemy inclination than my duty, as commander in chief of this fleet, to convey to you, in the name of my' na tions, as well as individually, my sincere acknowledg ments'for this proof of your friendly disposition. I am also fully aware of tlie extent of'y our humanity to- w.-u-ds the officers and men of his majesty’s ship Prome theus, who were so unjustifiable detained and thrown in to chains by this f, rocious chief; inasmuch as you not only clothed them, but furnished them with money to relieve the cravings of hunger. Such acts ofhumanc generosity flight not to be unrecorded, particulariy when they were exercised at the risk of your personal safety; and it will be a gratification to me, to bring this circumstance be fore the view of liia majesty’s government in the light it merits. I must request you will do me the favor to inform me of the expense you have been at, in alleviating tile sufferings of my distres ed country men, in order that I may repay you—and I shall at all tunes be ready to acknowledge to your country this act of benevolence.
