Sunday School.
nenfflendeai and icachers
The atuieriRendeni and teachers of the Savan
nah Sunday School would ayain call the attention
of the community to this institution. It is not
one of tboeo virionary plana, the advantages of
which are riiown only in idle speculation’ or by
plausible theory: it has stood the tort of experi
ence. They immense benefit* resulting from such
societies h five Keen shown in different countries,
anflFin various parts of our own landt and they
have ooC been unfelt in this city. We are con
fident that wben the nature aad effect of tbe insti
tution are. examined, il will excite a warm interest
inthe bottom of every lover of bis county, of eve
ry friend or the poor, of every servant of God.
Its attention is clucflly, though not exdosively,
directed to thp rising generation, the hope of the.
Church a nd the state. It was originally intended
princips By for the ^noram—those who had not
opportunity atr Brians of otherwicsacquiring the
fi(4 ele menta of learning. For these its doors are
yet opesi^jmil to them instruction Is gratuitously
given. I tut since the establishment of a free school
to our city, the teachers of the Sunday School dr.
vote their time more exclusively to the religious
instructi on of those Under tlieir care, teaching
them no ft only that they have minds to be informed
with us eful knowledge, but also souls, the saiva.
lion of which deserve their first cam pointirg
out to ybem the way to heaven and to Gods guard
ing tin im from youthful vices and errors, and mak
ing th tm acquainted with those precepts of reve
lation i which can be their defence in a world of
tempi jation. of trial anil of dangers and which
open ■ to them scenes of consolation in the peri,
od ot.’ sorrow and the hour of dgjitb. la this reli
gion f instruction they have no sectarian views.—
The /society by which the school is patronfod, as
well )i*tti teachers; arc of various denominations
anil they aim only to inculcate “ihe common
Clirial sanity." ,
Tbi «y entreat tin parents and-guardians of this
city- whatever may be their circumstances in IHV
or til. sir religious persuasion, to ooncur with them
in 'th f furtherance of a scheme of benevolence
which ifoey fed to be disinterested, and which they
know to be enlightened. Fof tide purpose they
requs t them to send tbetr children and Ward*; i d
•Kcas jonally tb visit, the school, that they may
there ipersonalty mark its advantages and animate
both teachers ahd scholars. For these visits they
will be recompensed, if we wav judge by our own
experience, by the effect produced on our own
rebg jous feelings. The earnestness and anxiety
of i be young about tbe things of etenrtyi their
plan s, simple question* relating to God, to Christ
and salvation, cannot fail of giving new spirit and
seal to tbe move advanced Christian.
T My would remind the people of Savannah
that,, while it is their joy to instruct the deaolate
'orph an and "the needy that bath no helper,” tin
school » established for all classes—the rich as
well as the poor. Tbe attendance of the children
of t he more affluent is of much importance to the
aeh. iol—not only as it respects their own improve,
me ot. but aa a meant to stimulate and encourage
footjLVhom Providence has denied the blessings
win fch-they enjoy.
1 Tie school is still held in the academy, at tbe
hou.w of nine and “twelve o’clock, every Lord'*
day. ' A separate apartment is provided for ihale
adul' I.
Th ie superintendent and teachers encouraged
by th e past, and grataful for the kindness of Fro-
• video ee to the institution, are determined to con
tinue their exertions -satisfied, if they are mane
the b limbic instruments of. leading the young to
the i. s.lulgcnce of love and thankfulness to tbe
