about the middle of August, landed a email part
of her cargo, and proceeded for Calcutta.
By the ship Minerva, arrived last i.ight, we
learn, that part of the town of Port Lewis, which
was consumed by fire in October, 1816, had not
been rebuilt, although there was no want of mat
erials forthat purpose, Lumber and bricks had
beets imported in great quantities from England,
as also frames of homes and window frames, toge
ther with all aorta of kitchen furniture.
There are now 6re companies established at,
- Fort Louis, furnished with engines and fire hooks,
the good effects of trhieh have already been ex
pcrienced. There was an alarming fire on the 2d
of July last, about two o’clock in the morning,
which destroyed a very valuable dwelling house
and msgaxine, with several out-houses, anil dam
aged the adjoining building. There were 500 casks
of claret, and 200 bales of cotton in the magazine,
bewdea other merchandize, all of which was con
sumed.—The wind had been very strong during
theTore part .of the night, and blew hard when the
alarm was first given, wh'eh added much to the
fears of the inhabitant, as the fire was to wind
ward; but fortunately the wind fell almost to s
calm before the fire was at its height. The persons
having charge of the fire engines and hooks, were
very active on tint occasion, and received the
llianlu of the governor—*Y. Y. Gazelle.
