GAINES THE INDIANS.
Office 'MUtilgerHtt Re/letesr, Dec. 9, 1917.
Extract of a letter from an intelligent
E tlcman at Fort Hawkins; to the editor,
i‘d December Si—-‘•Captain Stalling*
ariHvcil here this morning, in MVfcn days,
from Fort Scott, and bring*.letter* from
^oner i Gaines announcing a second *fcir-
■tureli with the Indian*. The detachment
< M|lHRiaiVlrfhfio<lMM/oi MM, aoderthe
command of colonel ArbUriklc. IV)
mere attacked about twelve mile*, libiu
Fort Scott bjr a party of Fowl-Town
and Osonchce Indians, sappo-tetl to be
about 100, and had one man killed*- and
two wounded, one dangerously. T^e In
dian loss was supposed to-be 8 or 10.—
They captured some cattle during the
flight, which were retaken in the towns
lyhigatioa 18 mile* from Fort Scott. The
detachment then retreated 4 miles, au*i
threw up breast work*. The effective
force at Fort Scott is about 800 to 1000
4t»> No doubt i* now entertained 61 the
hostile intentions ofghc Indians. Captain
'Stalling* thinks it is 220 niilesat least from
here to Fort Scott. All this through a pine
barren, and mostly new roads, or perhaps
none at all.”
