OJlee of lie Uelector*
., ; iW4i,i Ahfarsfcv lil, 1817
The .editor of the ReHet-lor "receivcri la*?
night the following important letter from
. hi* attentive and obliging cnire.*pnn«len<,
(an officer of the staffs) dated “Port H:w-
Juns, December 10. * ....
“The fifing which wit* supposed to be an
attack upon colonel Arbucklu's camp w;
9 cannonading from Fnft 8cott. in retm
of some Brea which the Indian* made up
On the boat* which were building in Um-
river. Nothing loaleriol resulted. Tin
account whicii'l gave you in my last, rela
live to the foraging party being cut off is
probably incorrect, as it lima not been con
firmed.
“I /expect you have Iwtd an express from
'General Gains* in Milledgeville to-day
via Hartford, ' Ita content* have transpir
ed here, that is, that general Gsines, as
• ecsfainetl that major Muldenburg was as
'vending Apalacha, and dispatched two
‘boats to his assistance, .r d so collect pro
visions. One boat commanded by lieuten-
-«nt Scotft with 50 then, was attacked 1.?
-miles below Port Scott, and the who!- 1
'was was massacred, except sis who sav
themselves by swimming, four of whom
were wounded. From the other boaUand
-another which had been up the rirrrj|b>w
tiling had been heard. An express from
.general Jackson to general Gaines, who
" FeftlMtfe on Friday, returned to-night—be
took the route by Port Gaines, but was una
ble to proceed even that far. lie penetra
ted within ten miles of the fort, wnen lie ob
served fresh Indian signs, and a few mil
further came to where two white men had
been killed, one of whom was Mr. Join.
Chambers, of Port Games... The expr-s
had heard from them frequently by person •
whom he met, and was trying to overtak
J them, and at the time of the murder could
not have been more than five miles behind.
They were killed last .Monday piurniu-.
within a few. miles of the place where they
bad iuca ped the night before.
The appearance indicated about twenty
Indians, and the trail entered the road i:
the direction of Fort Gaincs,at which place
there is .merely a sergeant’s guard of 1
men. and a few of the neighboring inhab
itants who have tak -n refuge there. So
safe, however, have the inhabitants ,'onsi
dered themselves there that some, it -s
said, are so credulous as to make tliei:
yard-railing their only breast-work, an- :
tlie alarm has come so sudden upon them,
that retreat is impossible, or at Ip.ast dan
gerous. Fort Gaines is said to be be ol
considerable strength; Fort Sc -tt is a mere
camp, having very partial defences. Two
expresses dispatched from 'nrt Gaines to
Fort Scott hove not been heard of; nor
has the one sent from this pi a re since
he left Fort Mitchell. Jackson’s ex
press says that he was informed bv a
friendly chief that general Gaines had
sent advices to Fort Mitchell reqest-
injs that as lew passages should be made
thro’ the nation as possible. This is pro
bably correct, and necessary, as the hostile
influence seems to be extensive ami scat
tered and the middle town on the rout to
Fort Gaines, which is a vowedly hostile,
lies only 57 miles below the labama road.
Governor Mitchell is at Fort Mitchell, and
will use his influence and authority with
the nation in courting their neutrality, or
' directing their vengeance.
