THE SEA-SERPENT A 7 TACKED.
PalUHiivn Offer, Ration, otugtint 21.
The report this morning respecting the
sea-serpent is. that a boat, with 14 men on
board, which went in pursuit of him, has
fallen in with him—and the commander
threw a harpoon into him, to which empty
casks were connected by a chain—that the
water immediately became discolored by
tne blood from the wound; and tlie mon
ster darted oil’, carrying with him all the
apparatus, which is intended to destroy him,
id he a buoy to his remains. If we have
misunderstood no part ot this report, there
certainly now great reason to expect
the body of tliis great mammoth of the
deep will soon be on shore lor exhibition,
to remove nil doubts and satisfy curiosity.
1*. .•*. The above mentioned boat was
fitted out by a merchant in this town, and
cominandeil by captain Richard Rich, who
threw the harpoon. The bo it lift Cape
Cud on Sunday last, and fell in with tlie
irister on Thursday, ia Iprivi. h bay.
Jlferchtwlt* Hall, Hatton, .Ingas! 21, * P ,M
Captain Rich, who went from here a
vv days since, in pursuit of the sea-set -
r.t, writes tin- concern as follows:
’ S.-uaoi Hirer, jtngust CO, 12 o'clock.
Alter several unsu-cessfu! attempts, w«
have at length fastened tu this strange
thing called the se.x-sci pent. We stiuek
In in fairly, but the harpoon soon drew
lie has not been seen since, and I
fear tlie wound lie lias tcceived will make
111nt more cautious how lie approaches these
shores. Since my last, yesterday, we
nave been constantly in pursuit of him bv
day; he always keeps a proper distance
n u<, to prevent our striking him.—
But a few hours since, I thought we were
me of him, for I hove the harpoon into
im a« fairly a ever a whale was struck:
lie took from us about twenty lathoms nl
*rp before we could wind tne boat, with
much swiftness as a whale. We had
but a short ride when we were all loose
from him. to our sore disappointment.
Richard Rich.’’
C! uc tur, .ingatt 2D.
“As 1 thought it would be interesting to
you to hear from captain Rich, anil as he
is at so tie distance, 1 will g-.ve you some
particulars of his rruise. On Mo'nday last
tic sailed Irom this in a large whale boat,
and two smaller oucs, well manned. Mv
brother commanded one of the boats.—
Yesterday they met the serpent off Squam,
anil chased him about seven hours, when
they closed with him. He passed directly
under ill.- bows of captain Rich's boat; he
immediately threw the harpoon, which
pierced mm about two feet; lie drew the
boat considerable distance, but went
with such velocity that he broke that part
of the boat through which the rope passed,
and drew out the harjrooa 1 hope they
will hart another opportv.ilfy before they
give dp the chase. He has no scales on
him, and no bunches on bis bark, but his
skin is smooth, anti looks similar to an eel.
In the attack, captain Rich had one of iiis
hands wounded. These particulars I have
in a letter from my brother.
Sami. Dexter.”
