ANIT MONTHI.y
JOURNAL OF POLITE LITERATURE.
rnilE Proprietor, of this popular uml well
A known periodical, has tho gratification of
replying to the many utiuctinmitujuquirie* after
Its resumption, and announces to his kind friends
• and patrons—frteuds and patrons in the true
meaning of tho words—that*he will resume tho
publication next;Junuury # Restored hy a beuefi-
• cent Providence one more to active life, lie hopes
aguin to be able to give that superintendence, to
the publication which was his pride and pleasure
for seveuysurs. Ho anticipate*, with inexpres
sible suti*mction, tho renewal of associations with
thousands of futuilius, with either of whip Ii an uc-
( quaititmice is an iioiionr. During his protract-
‘ed indisposition, the intensity of suffering was
gteatly mitigated by the generous expressions of'
sympathy uud regard received from his kind-heart
ed patrons; and tho gloom and tedium of a sick
room were much lightened by the rays of genu
ine friendship emitted from every quarter. This
egotism, ho hopes, will be judged of mildly—ho
certainly has no wish to uiuke udisplay—but the
impulse of grateful acknowledgment for such
disinterested kindness wus irrepressible, and he
could uotaunouuce the rcappeuruuce of tho work
without yielding to it. *
To those friends he addresses himself, solicit
ous for their continued support, and hopes to
have the Library once mure introduced umohg
their families, see it honored aguiu with u 'place
‘on their centra tables, and become a welcntile
weekly visitor. He is at tiio same time very deal-
rous to extend his acquaintance uud form new
friends.
From the arrangements made, dictated by ex
perience, the Library, it is believed, wilt in every
respect he improved. The type will he more
'distinct, the monthly sheet continue Aandu week
ly cover beside. The cover will be made so as
to avoid the extra postage. The monthly Jour
nal he hopes to make a sheet of abiding interest,
so combining original and select articles,'of fur-
*-«Igii and domestic literature, science and art, und
lroiu such sources of re»pectibilUy)as to make It
' a work of authority and reference.
The regularity of its former publication, not a
failure in seven year*, will be taken us u guarantee
'for the future punctuality of tho Library; but
there is only one way to make that permanent viz:
by payment in advance. This is an indispensible
pro-requisite from ullat a distance. Tho losses
‘ by devmting from this rule formerly are too heuvy
to be forgotten soon, and it little reflection may sa
tisfy any one of the reasonahlenos of the request.
The reuson* are too obvious, indeed, to requiro
much diacussiou. $5nraull tliutu subscriber risks
but the publisher risks thousands, hy crediting.
The publisher is iu a city, and can bu reached
without trouble. A subscriber lives perhupsa
thousand mile* off, uud how is he to bo reached?
U might cost six times the amount to collect the
trifle. Payment in advance, then, as all may per
ceive, i* a reasonable request and sad experience
compels the proprietor to make it absolute. The
few who paid iu advance for 1840, will be sup
plied for 1841, unless otherwise ordered.
An early remittance of names i* respectfully
urged,so as to enable the proprietor to make prop
er calculation* about the quantity to be printed,
ns lie will print very few over the number abso
lutely subscribed for. To this he would cull par
ticular attention.
To his brethren of tho press, throughout the
'country, Die proprietor returns grateful thanks for
former favours, uud hopes the works will be again
•so conducted as to wurrunt a renewal of their
friendly assistance. A few copies of the Port
Folio are still on hand, n year of which will be
-forwarded in payment for advertising as much
of thisannonncemeut us they may think au equiv
alent; or two years will be Xentfbr pnblislifng the
