sometimes so blended vviih discussions in litera
ture or in moral Science, otherwise unobjection

whenever that happens, they are incidental only;
not primary,—They are dross tolerated only be

Reviews mid Critical Notices occupy their line
apace in the work; and it is the editor’s aim that
they should have a threefold tendency— to con
vey in a condensed form, such valuable truths

work* reviewed,—to direcltlie renders attention
to books that deserve to bore.nd,—and to warn
him again*! wasting time and money upon that
large number, which merit only to be burned.
In this age, of publications that by their variety
mid uibliiiude distract uud overwhelm every tin-
discriminating student, impartial criticism"gov
erned by the. view* just mentioned, is one of
thu most inestimable uud indispensable of aux
iliaries, to him who dons wi-h to discriminate.

And of indigenous Poetry, enough is published
—sometimes of no mean strain—to manifest unii
Jo cultivate the growing poetry', lusto mid lu-
bnts of our country. •
The time appears, for seven! reasons, to de
mand such a work: mid not one ahum, hut many.
The public mind i* feverish and irritated still, from
recent political strifes. The soft nsrensivu influ
ence of literature is needed, to allay that fever
aid smnntha that irritation. Vice and folly are
rioting abroad: they should he driven by indig
nant rebuke, or lashed by tidicule, into their fit
ting Imuills. Ignorance fords it over nn immense
proportion of our people. Every spring should
lie set in motion, to arouse live enlightened, mid
to increase their number; so tlmt the great one
my of popular governmeiit'may nn longer brood,
like a portentous cloud over tlm destinies of onr
country. And to nccomp'iVh a! these ends, wh«
more powerful agent can he employed, than u
periodica), on the plan of tlm Messenger; if that
jilnube hut out l ied out in practice!
Thn Ho.-lli peculiarly requires such an agent.
Iu ull the Union, smith of Washington, there uio
but two literary periodica!*? Northward of that
city, there uro probably tit least twenty-five or
thirty!—I* this contrn*t jttsnfiwl by lie* wealth, tlm
leisure, thn native talent,(or thu uctnul literary
taste, of ihe Southern people, compared with
tlioso of tlm Northern? • No: for in wealth, tul-
mils and taste, we may justly claim nt least an
eqiiuilly with our bretlieni; and a domestic insti
tution exclusively our owi), beyond ull doubt, al-
fords, us. if we clumso, twite tho (ensure for read
ing and writing which they enjoy.
It was from a deep sense of this local want that
the word Southern was engrailed ou this peri
odicnl; and not with ntiy design to nourish local
prejudices; or to udvucuiu supposed local inter
ests. Far from any siicfi*thought,it is the edit
or’s fervent wish toscAllm North nnd South
hound endunriugly together forever, iu the silkun
bands of mutual kindness and infection. Fur
from mediating hostility to the North, he has al
ready drnvy n. and he hopes therefore to draw much
of hi* choicest matter thence: mid luippy indeed
will ho.dimui himself, should his pages, by mak
ing each .region known the other belter, contri
bute iu any nssentiul degree to dispel the lower?
ng clouds that now hrenten tlm peace of both,
mid to brighten und strengthen the sacred lies of
fraternal love.
