A he THESE THINGS sot—If
XI the body daily receive a proper amount of
nutrition, and daily expels the worn out parU by
the sensible and insensible* evacuants, health ia the
natural consequence.
All medicine can do is to secure these resulU.
Therefore, that medicine which docs secure
them is universal in its powers for good to the hu
man body.
Let us see. The blond comes loaded with im
purities when from any cause the pores oftbe skin
do not perform their functions properly. A sudden
change of weather may occasion this w hen the hu
mors are too redundant) want of proper cleanliness,
by permitting perspired particles to' remain upon
the skin, has tho effect in some instances to retard
insensible perspiration; tho anine effect follows tho
ubu of greasy matter to the skin, as ointments and
the like. AU causes that impede insensible perspi
ration are aura to occasion great disorder in the
body. Costivencs* occasions the greatest im
pediment to insensible perspiration of all .other
causos combined. Because the matters which
linvo once been thrown into tho bowels, are only
those which nature could not make sufficenUy
fine to no off any otlior way aavo by the bowel-r.
(Veil. These vory mutters instead of being daily
evacuated, are retained iu the system, and re-ab
sorbed again hito the circulation. Hut they cannot
prespiro ; they only load tho blood with impurities)
only gum up the pores; they can never go out save
by the bowels, or by tumors, boils or some errnp-
lions of tbe skin) good physicians know thia uni
versally aa well ns Dr. Uraudroth. But the great
difficulty in all these cases of costiyencss, in all
these casea of re-absorbtinn, is that the blood not
only becomes contaminated, but that tbe porea or
tho skin become so clogged with gummy matters
thnt great danger to the body neenra. Vor be it
known to all men, that actual experiment has de
monstrated that in twenty-one hours, in a healthy
condition ofthe skin, we part hy insensible prespi-
rntioti with four times as much impurities from the
body, as we do by all the sensible evacuations to
gether in the same time. Wo cannot then fail to
see the terrible consequences which must soon re
sult to the body, when the pores are from any
cause retnrdod in the full exercise ot their powers.
The first thing which follows a state of costive-
ness, ia a cold ahivering. perhaps head-ache; on
tho lungs there mny be oppression, *nd very soon
fever will follow, if it do not accompany tho pre
ceding symptoms.
In health we perspire about two ounces per hour.
In sickness arising from the above, causes, we
•oarcely perspire st all. Consider, then, the enor-
mus amount of mattera which must bq thrown into
tho blood. Of course we may expect severe pains—
sometimes death will take place before we can ob
tain an operation from tbe bowels. Bui, my friends,
instead nf using Brandreth’s Fills, shall we use
tlinsa remedies which carry death and deslruction
in their train t Shall we use Balsams. Lozenges nr
Ointments 1 These means may prove palliative,
may reduce the amount of suffering, may throw
these matters from the point where the pain ir:
may, in fact, cause the humors which produce the
pain to be thrown again into tho circulation. But,
my friends, it is not out of the body. It may settle
upon a vital part, and death bo (he consequence at
once. No remedies are safo unless they take
out disease iu a palpable form. When we have
C ain in any part of tho body, that pain ia caused
y tho retention of those mattera which ought
to have come away by the bowels. They must
come by that channel beforo health can oo es
tablished. Bo sensible then —use those reme
dies only which bodily take out from'the bowels
and circulation all those matters which have been
retained bnyonJ the time Nature designed or health
permitted. ' And for this purpose Brandreth’s Fills
are all sufficient. Let it be understood, tint in all
cases,if possible, they should be used on an empty
stomach. Tho Fills will always have a better ef
fect. Not but they are perfectly aafo at any time )
they are so. The object is to insure tho greatest
amount of good, and this is accomplished by taking
them on an empty stomach. Because the object ia
not to accelerate digestion but to remove the era-
ditios from the blood; and the Fills, always passing
into the blood, do so more ensily, nnd with greater
comfort to the body, when tho atomach has nothing
to oppose to them in their passage through it to the
first intestines, and so into the circulation. For
when the Fills are swallowed, they firat pass
into the stomach, and having been dissolved
there, next pats into the small intestines whence
the iactenls stuck them up and pass them along,
with a portion of chyle, into tho veins first, and
afterwards into the arteries. I suppose, they,
the Pills, impart nn extra power to arterial blond
to deterge morbid matters wherever it may find
them ) and also passing such morbid matters from
the nrteries to the veins, which bring them to
the liver, pancreas and kidneys; in consequence
of which, these organs become more vigorous
in their secretions, and expel not only the cru-
ditios which linvo been thrown into them from all
parts of the body, but also those whibh they them-
■olVes.cnntained previous to the collection of crudi
ties or impure humors or matters are discharged in
to the bowels and is being accomplished when you
feel that filling up of the bowels, which warn that
they are about boing moved. This feeling takes
place in health, only to a less extent; for it is the
same principle that moves tho bowels to discharge
their contents ; apd these acrid or acid humors are
provided by Nature for this very purpose—that of
producing the nlvino evnetintion—and it is only
when they aro in too grant n quantity that dis
ense is produced. Tho Brandeth Fills bring
these humors from all parts nf the body to the
bowels, which viscera ia excited by their pres
ence, and so occasions their expulsion from the
body, thus it ia seen that the Fills lose their indi
viduality after bocoming dissolved in the stomach}
nnd the purgation is solely from the effect produced
by the cleansing the blood receives af its impurities.
Beware of counterfeits. Be careful to apply on
ly to Dr. Brandreth’s duly appointed Agents for the
Fills, all others are spurious.

B UCHAN'S- HUNGARIAN BAL
SAM OP LIFE—Tho ino.1 cetebralcil and
infallible English remedy for Colds, Coughs, Asth
ma, and ever* term or Pulmonary Consumption, la
the Hungarian Balsam of Llfo, discovered by the
eminent Medical Chemist, Dr. Buchan, of London,
England, nnd extensively known as tho “Great
English Remedy.” It haa been tpated for upwahfs
of seven years in Great Britain and on the Conti
nent of Europe, where it ia universally considered
the great and only remedy fur this awful malady,
nnd is now introduced into the United States under
the immediate superintendence, of the inventor.
Within three years it line been distributed from
Maine to Florida, and from Canada to Wisconsin,
nnd iu effocts are every where alike astonishing and
triumphant!
As a preventive medicine, and an antidote against
the Consumptive tendencies of the climate, it is:
invaluable. Aa a remedy for severe and obstinate-,
Coughs, Inflammation ol the Lunga, Croup, Sic., it
is unrivaled. But the American Agent is so confi
dent of the merit of this great Remedy, in the worst
terms or Consumption, that he preiers to have it
used by the dying invalid, rather than by persona
afflicted with simple and less dangerous disordtrs of
tho Throat nnd Lungs. 'Phis may seem strong
language; but it ia the result of experience in thoua- -
nnd* of esses, sustained by the moat intelligent and
unimpeachable testimony. We do not pronounce
it on (infallible remedy in all oases, but it is th*
most Infallible remedy known to tho civilised,
world. It lathe best preventive of hereditary Con
sumption; it ia tho best defender against the influ
ences of climate) it is the best remedy for incipient
Consumption) and it is the great and only remedy
for that tearful softening of the Lungs, Jnflamms-’
tion of tho Membrane, and Tuberculoua Decay,
widen ore the last effecU of that awffil scourge, and
which are erroneously supposed to be boyohd the
reach of medical aid. The Agent or Proprietors'
of other medicines, dare not claim for their prepar
ations a power like this. They know that in no
case have such effects been produced. Tha grand
object and purpose of the comtnon ‘remedies’ is .*
■imply to givo relief-not to cure. This is easily ,
done, by any intelligent Phyaician or druggist—but
while dallying with these delusive compounds, the
patient rapidly dec'incs, and everyday places him'
fart her and farther beyond the reach of hope!
Such ia not the case with the Hungarian Balsam.
It is always salutary in ita vffecta—never injurious,
It is not on Opiate—it is not a Tonic—it t* not a
mere Expectorant. It ia not intended to lull the
invalid into a fatal security. It ia a great remedy— -
a grand healing and curative compound, the great-
and only remedy which medical science and skill
has yot produred terthei treatment of this hitherto
uncniiqticrcd malady. It Is, Ir fact, the best reme^
dy in the world! And no person, afflicted with this *
dread National Disease, will be just to himself end
his friends, If he go down to tha grave without test
ing iu virtues. A single bottle. In most cases, will
produce a favorable change in the condition of any .
patienthowever low, though there are cases, wV
admit, beyond IU power to cure.
The Americnn Agent of Uio Great English! Rem-
edy having full confidence in ita extraordinary effi
cacy in tho worst forma of Pulmonary disease,
boldly aolicita for treatment, not the common and
ordinary cases ofsimple Colds of Inflammation, but
what are considered the most appalling cases of '
confirmed and incurable Tuberculoua Disease! ;
If there is a remedy in the world, it ia to bo found
in Dr. Uuchan'a Hungarian Balaam, it haa cured 1
cases supposed to be past all hope. It has raised
invalids, aa it were from the very grave. It haa

D ll. SWAYNE’S COMPOUND
SYRUP OF WILD CHERRY,—This “Cel
ebrated Remedy” has now, by iu intrinsic virtues, •
acquired s celebrity which cannot beahakon by the
many quack “Nostruraa” with which tho country ,
abounds. The public are fast learning that this is.
the only remedy’that can bo relied upon for .the '
speedy and permanent cure of ull diseases of'the
Lungs. It is literally aweeping Consumption from
the land) wherever it ia introduced ana becomes
known, all others dwindle into insignificance. Tho'
public have been humbugged long enough, and now
resort to n medicine which the testimony of the
most eminent physicians in the land haa placed be
yond the rench of criticism. It reqoirea no bolater*.
mg up, by publishing columns nf forged certificates—
but it ia enough to let the public know where it can
bo obtained, and one trial will convince all of its.
efficacy in curing those distressing diseases above
named, which have baffled the skill of the most
learned practitioner* for ages heretofore.
DR. SWAYNE’S COMPOUND SYRUP OY
WILD CHERRY was the first preparation from
that valuable tree which waa ever introduced to the
public, and ample proof is afforded of iu success
by the country being flooded with ’Balsama,’ 'Can- i
dies,’and ‘Mixtures’.of Wild Cherry, notone of
which is prepared by. a regular physician, although ,
they have assumed the name* of respectable phy
sicians to givo currency to tbqir “Nostrums.”— •
Therefore, the public should be on their guard, and
not haven worthless mixture palmed upon them
for the originnl nnd genuino preparation, which is
only prepared by Dr. Swayne, N. E. corner oF -
Eighth and Race-streeta, Philadelphia.
Consumptives, nr those whose Lungs are affect- -
ed slightly, should take this Syrup without delay,
by which they may prevent, tho fixing of that dire
disease fully and firmly. How important, then, to
avoid it. Never live n day with a bough when this »’
Syrup can be had, and you aro nearly certain, with
proper enre, to avoid destruction by Consumption.
DR SWAYNE’S COMPOUND SYRUP OF
WILD CHERRY is a compound of Vegetable
Remedies; ills called “Wild Cherry,” because th*-’
article ia the basis of the Preparation. It is so.-
combined with other ingredients, r thst tbe utmost :
efficiency ia given to ita good qualities; as a sup
porter nnd preserver of the powers and functions ,
of life, it has no equal.
