OJ- Wc take great pleasure in referring our
cutoinpomric* In iho interior nnd elsewhere to the
tulvrrlis -inent iu this mornings paper of tho
Typo Foriudery of Pibldi!«o Ia-can, Jr., Esq., of
Baltimore. The Wpns now used in the Repubti-
can arc from this foundcry, aud sufEi icntly re
commend themselves. It is proper to remark,
that the types made at Mr. Lccas’ manufactory
areas pre-eminent for their durability as they are
for beauty.-
09* The article on “Frmihint Nout,” in this
morning’s paper, will lie'found interesting.
BaACKUCTt.—Tlte number of Bracelets lost in
Savannah this season would suffice to set up a
modest man in busincas. These articles ought,
it would seem, to have a small chain attached,
with or witliout a locket, which would barely
allow them to paas over the hand if the clasp
should become unfastened. By tilts means, Utcy
would Bcl-’orn be missed.
Thb Clovkm Foot,—Wo have expressed .thft.
opinion kgaln and itgitin, that the “noise nnd
confusion’* which Ute opposition hnvo simultane
ously made on tho Slavery question, proceeded
from corrupt and partisan considerations. Not a
few of their papers have attempted to relievo
their party from Ute cliatgc, but without sucoess.
Knowing that the Whigs of the South Itod un
shaken confidence iu Gen. Tavlob, nnd Umt they
would therefore oppose nil incendiary movements
looking to the probablo disruption of the Union,
the Democratic agitators thought to make capital
by playing the part of tho ultra and pcculinr
friends of our Institutions, while wo were to be
held upas Uiefrieuds of the Union at the etftnee
of the South. Tho game Iwwcver, was too bare-
fared to succeed.
Tho scheme had its origin iu Washington City,
ns is evident front the conduct of certain South
ern members. We learn from tho Washington
corrcspoiK-cnt of Ute Charleston jt/irmtrjf, that the
report of Mr, Caliiovn to the meeting of South
ern Members on Ute 15th, was opposed by Messrs.
IIowbll Cobb, of Utis State, McDoa’BLL, of Vo.,
Linn Bovp, of Ky., McCat, of N. C., and Lan,
of Md., nil Democrats guod and true, bocauso it
was not partisan enough iu its character. They
wished tlte movement to bo in lire name of tire
Democracy. Tire correspondent twys t
“The objccUnn of these gentlemen 1 understand
to be, that the address is not exclusively a party
nddrem, appealing to the Democratic party alone,
Tlreir policy would he, to make this great ques
tion a mere makeweight in the party nruggles of
the Unlou.”
We hope tire correspondent of tho Memory is
mistaken, and especially in regard to Mr. Cos*.
Though opposed to hint in politics, we should Ire
sorry to believe tlmt ho could be guilty of such
gross nnd unpatriotic conduct aa to tamper with
this dangerous question for corrupt party pur-
purrs. He must have acted from some other nto
live—at least we hope so. It will be seen, how.
ever, by reference to tire letter front Washington,
published in our columns this morning, that Ute
Memery'e correspondent docs not stand alone in
his view of tire rate. Our own correspondent loolA
upon Ute matter In the same light, and says Umt
tire Southern movement wns got up* to “ enable
die so railed Democrats to take vautago ground
and defeat Ure Whigs in the popular clccUons in
the South.” Between April and November next,
Congressional elections are to bo held in Virginia,
Maryland, North Carolina, Alabamn, Missis
sippi, Tennmseo and Kentucky. Besides, there
are two Senators depending upon Ure cotuplqxion
of Ure new legislature in Alarms. It can bo
very easily understood that Uto party which has
just been defeated in tire South, would avail itself
of any tucau**bowcvcr desperate, to recover its
lost ground, ami Utis will readily explain the zcr.l
of Ure Vsbablks, the Bavly’s, tho Kino'*, (of
Ala.) and such like, wire have nothing lo lose and
every Uting to gain by agitation.
Judge Bcanicx, it seems, has taken a promi
nent part in tire lost meetings. Wo trust lie will
be able to “bring order out of confusion,” and to
relieve the movement of its objectionable char
acter.

A number of Executive documents were laid

was one from Ute Treasury Department, iu reply
to a resolution of the House calling for infonna-,

so for ns they arc concerned, they will resist this

Tito adjourned meeting of tho Southern Caucus
which is to be held on Monday next attracts con

It is said that dispairing of procuring tire adop

I think tiiat no such conclusion ns this will bo ar

This return affonls a ready means of ascertain
ing, so far as regards this particular item of the
import*, the comparative merits of tire Tarifis of
1842 and 1846, as revenue measures.
Take, for instance, the imports in 1848 and in
1845, and tire duties received, and compare them :
In 1848 tire import* were # 12,526,845 atyl duties
#3,736,223 20. In 1845 the imports were #8,-
291/166 and duties #3,672*141 66. Increase iu
imports #4,221,988, in duthw #61/HI 84.
Titus it will be perceh-ed (hat to gain an in
creased revenue of sixty four-tlreusaud dollars,
there hns ltad to be an increased importation of
four millions two hundraf and twenty-two
thousand dollars. So that while the imports have
increased upwards of FIFTY percent., the duties
so for front increasing in a corresponding ratio,
have but increased less than ONE AND THREE-
QUARTERS per cent. Or to be more exact and
precise, for every #100 worth of iron we import
ed in 1815, we imported #160 89 in 1848, while
for every #100 in duties wo received on iron in
1845, under tire Tariff of 1842, we received in
1848, under the Tariff of 1810, but #101 74; and
yet the Tariff of 1846 is glorified^asa ; Revenue
Ihriff par excellence. Vcrily*titis is the age of
humbug.
