MACAULAY’S ENGLAND.—Vol. II
. Macaulay's History or England.
The following extract from a long critique In the Na
tional Intelligencer, froth Us London corretpnndcnt, will
gin some Idea of the eitlmition ta which It U held there:
“.Mr. Maeaufey has here laid the fimndatlon of a new
school of history, although a previous attempt of a simi
lar description l* extint, in the very lntcrertlng work of
Dr. Henry, and its continuation by Mr. Andrews. “I
shall cheerrtilly bear,” says Mr. Macaulcy. “the reproach
or having defended below the dignity or nL toiy. ir I can
suceeed in placing l«firc the En|U>n of tlie nliiaecntb
century a true pi.-tare of the lives of their ancestors.”—
The opinions of the reviewers is almost unanimous that
the success of the experiment I* undcnlable-uncqulvo-
col; that so complete ahlstoty of a single reign has never
before been written. It i* pronounced to be, not a mere
history of tha King and hi# Ministers, not a record of
Cabals ta Uio cabinet, and adventure* in the Add, but a
“many-‘ld"d History of England, under tha luckless rule
of the last of the Stuart Kings.” Is iso History or the
Cabinet, of the Court, of the Priesthood, of the People—a
History of the social life of Great Britain, viewed In
every variety of aspect—a picture, or a series of picture*,
crowded with details: each, however, minute and seem
ingly unimportant, elaborated with the utmost core, and
beariug the impress orunmlstakable truth.*'

EXTRAORDINARY CURE OF RHEUMATISM.
Dr. Haynes—Dear Sir: For nine years I have been
affile ted with tlie most acute and distressing pains owing
to Rheumatism. It would come ou by spells, and gener

.to my room, and would cry^ut with agony, that the
neighbors could hear me. Life seemed a great burJen,
and every one about me were miserable on ray arcount.
Dally something would be given me—and I dreaded every
thing new. I suffered dreadfully and wasted away to
