Druggist and Chemist. That tome Ume In the Utter
part of May, or first of June, 1848, a man by the name
of Jacob Townsend, who at Uiat Ume waa a book and
pamphlet psddlsr, called upon deponent, at ths house
of Mr. Thompson, No. 49 Hudson-itreat, where dspo-

Deponent further isye, that he became acquainted
with said Townsend at the offlee of Theodora Foeter.
Ksn., Book Publisher, with whom laid Townsend
dealt That said Townsend had had frequent conversa
tions with deponent respecting the manufttoture of an
article of Sarsaperllla to he sold under the name of Dr.
Jacob Townsend.
That said Townsend stated he was an old man, and
poor, and wu not fit for hard labor—and wished to
make some money, In order to Rve easy In hla old
daya, and that, If Sarsaparilla under the name of Town
send told to well, and ao much money was made by
It, he could see no reason why ho might not make
aomathlng out of It too. (hla name being Townsend,)
if he could get a capable person to prepare a recipe,
and manufacture It for him. Dsponent In one of tits
conversations asked said Townsend if he wu related
to Dr. B. P. Townsend, to which ha replied, that he
knew Dr. 8. P. Townsend would be down mi him after
he should commence. But that he did not oare for
him, ai he had formed a co-partnership with men who
could furnish the requisite amount of capital—and was
well prepared to defend himself against any attaok
that might be made on him.
Dsponent further lays, that pursuant to the request
of aud Jacob Townsend, he wrote a recipe for the
manuflseture of a Syrup of Sarsaparilla, and gave It to
him. Said Townsend observed that he wanted to
meke a specimen to .exhibit to his partners for thsir
approval, u be wished to gratify them in every thing,
u they-furnished ell the capital—said Townsend also
told deponent that tho bottles they were to uio were
to be of tho seme sue end shape as Dr. 8. P. Town*
sand’s, end deponent, at tha request of sold Jacob
Townsend, went to the offlee of Dr. 8. P. Townsend,
and procured one of hit labels.
And deponent further says, that he has bean Inform*
ed, and verily believes the Hyrup of Sarsaparilla, sold
as Old Jacob Townsend’a, la made after tha recipe fur
nished by deponent, to Jacob Townsend, as aforesaid
And further deponent salth not.

There probably never bat been so popular a remedy,
or putont medicine, nt Dr. Townsends’* Sarsaparilla,
which was originally, and continues lo.be manufac-
tured in this city, at Ant by the Doctor himself, and
afterwards for aeverel years and to the present Ume,
by Clapp k Townsend, the present proprietors. 8lnce
the partnonbip was formed, the Doctor baa resided In
New York, whom hr keepe ■ store, and attends tothe
business that accumulates at that point The rnanu*
factory Is io this city, aud is conducted by the Junior
K rtner, Mr. Clapp—here all Uie medicine is manufac-
red.
Few of our citizens bavo any idea of Uie amount of
this medicine that la manufactured and sold. Besides
the sales In Ihl* country, it is shipped to the Canadas,
Weil India Islands, South America, and even to Eu
rope, In considerable quantities. At the manulhctory
they employ a steam engine, besides a large number

Townsend, formerly of this city, ns is well known
here, is the inventor and original proprietor of the
medicine known os “Dr Townsend’s 8arsaparlll»,”
and we think those person* who are attempting to sell
their article as the guiiuine, should be exposed.

no less than four hundred dozen of Sarsaparilla per
d*y, and even this enormous quantity does not supply
the demand. No medicine ever gained so great a
popularity as his preparation of the Sarsaparilla. Hla
edition or Alnimiacs for 1840 cost 633,000, and h*
has piiid the Now York Sun for advertising, In the
last four years, over 610,000, and he acknowledges
that it is the cheapest advertising he has Lad dona.
This medicine is exported to ths Canadas, West In-
dies, South America and Europe, in considerable
quantities, and is coming into general it*s in those
countries, as well as here.

and swindles tho customers. Men that would- bs
•guilly of such an act, would commit any othar fraud
—and no Druggist or common intelligence but knows

damages. We wish it to be understood, that the old man
is no relation to Dr. Townsend whatever. In their ad
vertisements and circulars, thsyjiublish a number of
gross falsehood* respecting Dr. Townsend, which wa
