The National Honor Vindicated.-The
Washington Republic, commenting upon the re*
turn of REY,thoabductodSpaniard, aaya s “Thus
promptly haa American honor been vindicated
by tho President. The moment that he had rea
son lo believe that an outrage had been commit
ted upon an individual ,entitled to the protection
of our law*, he adopted the precautionary mcaa*
urea called for by the circumstance* of the case.

Gencial. There was some reluctance displayed
in the first instance, we understand, by the au

dent had determined upon his policy, tits orders
have been transmitted to Havana, and Gabcia
haa been restored to tho jurisdiction of the United

While he is determined to restrain all illegal ac
tion on the part of our own citiacns—while he has
taken active, and, we hope, efficient measures to
prevent any invasiou of friendly territory by an
armed foice from our own ports—while he culti-
vatesamity with all nations as the best condition
of humanity, lie has not hesitated to take the
largest responsibility for tho iminediato enforce
ment of our rights, and the maintenance of our
national honor. And the Government of Cuba
may rest assured—and the people of the United
8tatcs require no guarantco—that in matters of
this description there will be neither subtle di
plomacy with the present Administration, nor
noise, nor bluster, nor retraction; but a quiet,
atraight-forward, honest, and manly policy, that
will aland up to tho right from the first, and
stand by the right to the last. If they begin
upon M° 40 1 , they will never end upon 49°. If
tliey make a treaty, they will never undertake to
cheat themselves or their neighbors by an elicit
protocol. They will never sutler neutral rights to
be invaded by fitting out hostilo armaments In
our harbors They will never alarm one-half the
natiou by a fulsc clamor of inevitable war, aud
then disgust the other half by accepting peace
on terms which they had themselves stigmatised
as ignominious. Their ends just—their means
honorable—tlicir policy peace—while they will
strictly respect the right*of allothsr nations, they
