* (X>- An error accidentally crept into the report
of the proceedings of the Whig meeting at Ly
ceum Hall. The meeting did not adjourn to Mon
day evening 10th inst. Tho next mcclitig will be
called when the Committee of Thirty Five arc
ready to report. We make the following correc
tion of names misspelt:—Francis Blair, instead
of F. Blnncc; and Daniel Toles, instead of D.
Tooly.
The Bueeb County Rail-Road.—We expected
to receive the official proceedings of the Waynes
boro* meeting, but from some accidental cause,
have been disappointed. The lettci from our coi
respondent, in another column, however, gives
full account of the proceedings; and we learn
further, from aorao of tho Savannah Delegates,
that the meeting was R large and enthusiastic
one, and much interest seemed awakened by Mr.
Cuvuea’s remarks, expisiuiog the views of our
citixcns; what we had done here in Savannah,
and what had been done by the people of Geor
gia; and all left prouder than ever of their noble
* Slate. Wo doubt whether any Rail-Road in the
United States was ever commenced under more
favorable auspices.
Charleston Quarantine.—We learn by tele
graph that the city Council of Charleston hav<
removed all quarantine restrictions from the Sa
vannah Boats. This is tho action of the new
board; but ns it is tbo old board re-elected, we are
at a loss to know why this was not done before.
We find now after the election that things are ex
pedient which were not ao before; and therefore
conclude that there was some electioneering
scheme connected with this quarantine. We arc
sorry to learn that tho enterprisiug owners
the boats have lost about $3,000 by this unneces
sary precaution,
New Cotton.—About eighty bales of the new
crop have been received here, and we notice tho
following from planters: 14 bales from Rev. Mr.
Harris;Burke county; 15 bales from the Messrs.
Holt, Burke county; 6 bales from estate of Tel-
rAta, Jefferson county; besides others who bavo
sent one or two bales. The balance liaa been re
ceived from merchants in Macon, Millcdgcviiif,
llawkiusvilic, kc. *
New Booke.—Ellen Percy, or Discipline: A
novel by Mart Brunton, from the press of II.
Lono k Brother. The intercat and scope of this
publication arc explained by the authoress, who
says " The appetite for fiction is universal, and
has unfortunately been made the occasion of con
veying pohon of every description into the youth
ful mind. Why must tbo snlidoto be confined to
such foi ms as are sure to be rejected by those
who most need it ? There is high authority for
using fable as tho vehicle of important, even of
solemn truth; and to this purpose it is here ap
plied without hesitation.'
Retribution: A tale of paseiem, by Emma D. E.
Nevitt Southworth—from tho press of the Har
pebs. Thrao pages comprise a serial talc con
tribuied for one of the leading journals of this
country. Tho authoress, in consequence of the
ndvice of friends and the favorable notice of the
press, has been induced to offer the work in its
pr*»enl form. The moral of ti{e story is
FT ** Crime is Us own Retribution.”
These works may bo had al-thc book-store of
Col. Williams.
South- Western Rail-Roed.— *Vy arc pleased
to learn from the Macon Juurnr' £ Messenger
that "the work upon the South-Western Road
progressed finely during tho last tuofrih, and
tho President of llic Company has 'made a
most favorable contract for the Iron to lay the
track, from Macon, to tho first depot upon tho
highlands west of the Flint River. 11 is to be de
livered at tho port of Savanuah, before tbo first of
January next, and will cost 1cm than $40 per ton.
The pattern adopted in a heavy flange rail, weigh
ing 63 tons to the mile. It is admirably adapted
to the character of tho business which will be
done on the Road, and wijl last longer than per
haps any other pattern which could have been
selected at equal cost. The depot west of the Flint
River, has boon located by the Engineer of tho
Company, and proposals for building the bridge
will be solicited at an early day. The contractor!
have already made arrangements for a consider
able portion ol tbo superstructure, aud we think,
there Is no longer a - -idow of doubt in regard
to the completion of the Road, to'the depot beyond
the river, in ample time for the corp of 1860.
“This Will bring the planters of Sgnith Western
Georgia within a few hours run of Macon,
and cuablo them to lay down their produce there,
at one half the cost to which they are at present
subjected. If the people of Columbus had only
cuergy enough or foresight enough to connect
with the South Western road at the Flint River, or
even at Fort Valley, the Statety Georgia could be
crossed by tbe central route at least two years be
fore the LaGrange and West Point road could be
completed. The current of travel would thus bo
changed, and untold advantages would inure to
those interested. Now is the time for them to
pursue a conciliatory aud rational policy. Wc
see no reason why a union, such ss spoken of,
might not be accomplished advantageously to nil
concerned."
Mr. L. T. Brown, of the United States le
gation at Bolivia, has written to tho Managers of
the American Institute, offering to procure alpac-
ca, vicuna or buna sheep for American Agricul
turists. Their cost in Bolivia, is from three to five
dollars each, but on account of the difficulty of
transportation, thoy would bo worth $75 each
delivered in Now York. Mr. Brown thinks it
would be an object to introduce these animals in
to this country, ns their wool is superior to that of
tho common shee^, and tho Northern States
adapted to their habits.—IV. Y. Tribune.

WAYNESBORO*, SEPT. 4th, ISI9.
GentlemenAt an early hour tills morning,
tho Commissioners of tho Augusta fk Waynes
boro* Rail-Iloml organised their Board, and de
termined that there should bo no delay whatever
in tbo organization of tbe Rail-Rond Company.—
You will sco by the advertisement of tho Com
missioners that tho books of subscription are to
be opened in duo form, early in October, and that
tho directors will bo elected on the 13th Novem
ber next. The Conimissioncniknowiug tho anxiety
of all parties in intotest to have a thorough and
perfect examination of tho country between
Waynesboro’ and Augusta, engaged the services
of F. P. Holcombe, Esq., Engineer of the South-
Western Road.tosurvoytherouteand toacudin hto
report by the 13th November. The country from
this place to the Central Rail-Road, in any di
rection, is highly favorable for a Rail-Road, but
from here to Augusta the surface is more broken
by water courses and sand hills. Tho experi
mental lino, run many years ago, from this to
Augusta, ivrs 32] miles long, whilst tho distance
in a direct Hue, is but 26]. It is believed that the
whole line from the Central Road to Augusta can
be ao located as not to exceed 50 miles in length,
Tho mooting of citizens on tho subject of this
great work convened about 11 o’clock, A. M. It
was a very large assemblage, and many of tho
most intelligent aud wealthy citizens of Rurke
were present. The Commissioners repot loti the ac
tion of their Board; whereupon it wo unanimous-^
ly resolved that
interest in tho
citizens of Savannah
that the Road should certainly bo built. Tho
meeting was addressed by Mr. Cuylsb, Chair
man of the Delegation from Savannah, who gave
a clear statement of the subscriptions already
made in that city, aud of tho very deep interest
and determined spirit manifested by the people
in that quarter. Ho was followed by tho Rev.
Mr. Gouldino, who made an Interesting and
spirited address. Subscription lists were opened
in tbo same form with thoso signet 1 iri nab,
and in tho course of an hour about $30,000 in
cash subscriptions wns put down. Many present
desired to subscribe largely to the work, provided
work could be given to them to be paid half in
■tuck aud half In money. Such subscriptions could
have been obtained on tbo spot to a very large
amount, if tho gcnoral route from this place to
Augusta had been ascertained prior to Ibis day.
1 am satisfied that the people of Burke will re
deem their pledge,—there is no doubt of a sub
scription In this county to tho amount of $100,
000. You can aay now that tho Road will be
built, and I beg to exprera the hope that we tnay,
within two years from this day, be whirled over
it in a Rail-Road Car in less Ilian two hours.—
God bless your noblo city for its liberal and en
lightened action in this matter.
Yours, respectfully, A GEORGIAN. *

The Prospects of the Crop.—Concurrent tea
timony from all sections lias brought us to the
conclusion that tho cotton crop will full material
ly short. In some pat ticulaj- localities, tho yield
may be a fair average one, while in others it will
bo comparatively nothing. In upper Georgia,
the crop wa* universally destroyed by tbe froat,
and the grounds were generally replanted with
Cofn. Tho few fields which were replanted in
cotton do not promise to yield much more than
half a crop. In the middle and South-Western
counties there cannot bo over throe-fourths of a
crop. Tho same thing may bo said of both South

prospect is represented as being somewhat bet
