The Charleston Mercury Dictating to
Georoia.—This offleiuus print, which is ever on
the look-out for an opportunity to interfere in the
affairsof this Slate, entered the field of Georgia
politics a few days ago aud kindly volunteered Us
advice to the people of our good old Common
wealth. It cannot find employment within its
own bailiwick, but must go beyond the limits of
Palincttodom for the avowed purpose of taking a
part in the local elections of our people. We are
reminded by this political busy-body of Raney
Sniffle iu the "Georgia Scenes,’* who, titougb tho
most contemptible caricature of a man in the State
in Us early settlement, liviug on dirt aud black
berries in the summer season, was never con-
tcntlinlCss he wss intermeddling in the business
of other people. Not satisfied with its former
manifesto to the pcoplu of Georgia, the Mercury
has issued its second, from which we make this
extract:
. “The A urusta Chronicle complains that “the
Charleston Mercury is making itself very officious
iu the Gubernatorial election ot Georgia.” The
Savannah Republican copies the complaint, ts,
indeed, it is sure to do with all articles, from what
ever source, or on whatever topic, provided they
contain the one thing needful—nn ill-natured fling
at South' Carolina, or tho Meicury. As to inter
ference. we have done ns little of it as possible;
intich less than we iutend to do hereafter.”
That we occasionally present the peruffnr po.
iitical idiosyncrasies of South-Carolina iu its
Quixotic struggles with n giant abstraction, is
very true; but it is not done in the way of “an ill
natured fling." Wo cannot say the same,
however, in regard to the Mtreury. We confess
that it gives us pleasure to expose Us utter desti
tution of prinrlpie, its contemptible shifting!, its
gross contradictions, its-revolutionary and dis
organizing tendencies, its double larcd interpre
tations of tho Constitution, its condemnation and
advocacy of the same man, its profntiont of De
mocracy and iU practice of despotism. Wc have
less respect for Us sincerity and opinions than any
other paper we can think of, not even excepting
the Federal Union. Ho man can tell wbat view
it will take of any question, until it has spoken.
If Col, Benton were nominated to-morrow for
President, it is doubtful whether it would uot
finally advocate bis clnima.
But tite Mercury tells ns that U has made bat
little interference in our State affairs thus (Mr
“ stuck less than it intendi to do hereafterF* Such
has ever been the course of that paper. We can
not build a Rail-Road or project an enterprise,
that it dote not “ interfere.” It may be after a
whil# (Hat it will consilium Itself general guar
dian of tho people of G’orgia, frame laws for
them, and decide whether it is not iu violation of
thE Constitution to build a certain niUMam, or
establish a country post office. We have not fur
gotten the manner in which it and the city au
thor itirs of Charleston “ interfered" in the trade
mud buiinets of this city by their disgusting ?»or-
tidtine regulation/. Nor havo we forgotten their
SlMpIcita efforts for the past several years to make
Georgia, with her population of800,900souls, her
magnificent system of Raiffiraya and her vast
sources, nil tributary to the town of Charleston!
We any to the fflfercnry, the pcoplo of this State
are intelligent and honest enough to dispense with
-its advice. When we stand In want of it,
will tsk for it. And If any man iu Georgia,
Whig or Democrat, con be influenced to vote for
Gov. Towns, who intended to vote for Judge
Hill, wc beg of him uot to do it In consequence
of any thing which the Mercury can say. Let
til.™ i* sotno other reason for it. Turn to some
honest Democrat fur ut» argument, but do uot

In conclusion, we submit to the people of Geor
gia whether it is not impertinent in the Mercury
thus to meddle in our local elections. It is

«• He Is a freeman whom ihe rnith makes free,
All cUa are tlavcs beside."
Memo. KdilonIt appears that tho indignant
and innnly rebuke of tho spirited Whigs of Bryan,
administered to thoso wretched Democratic press
es which havo been so tocklcss of tho truth and
decency is to dare to denounce ono*half tho Fryo*
men of Georgia as Provisoists aud Abolitionists,
hns aroused the scorn of your nmluble neighbors.
To avert the torrent of Just indignation about to
recoil upon their own heads fur such a malicious
and unwarrantable charge, the Georgian has
been forced to falsify its own statements aud deny
the charges recorded iu Us own columns.
Tho Georgian and Augusta ConilitutionaUtt,
not having the fear of God, before their eyes, and
In defiance of that law of probity which he has
impressed upon tho hearts and consciences of all
mankind, imperiously tequiringand exactiugof
them to prefer truth to falsehood, aud justico aud
right to error and oppression, have, fiiscly and
feloniously, and with ninlico prepense, charged
and accused the Whigs of Georgia and tho South
with “ believing that tho Wihuot Pioviso is con
stitutional." ‘After having made and reiterated
the charge time and again, when the rebuke comet
fioin the Whigs of Brynn.how do these veritable
Editors skulk out of the matter, and hide their
diminished heads? By any proof to substantiate
their calumny ? No! but by as vain attempts to
deny having made the chaigc, and eating their
own words!—and well they may deny it. They,
know that the charge is false and malicious.
After having copied the odious charge from the
columns of the Constitutionaliit and endorsed it,
that “numbers, (Aoutonds, if not tenectf thoutandt
Of' the I Hug. of Georgia believe the It'd mot Provi
so it constitutional,” the Georgian hns tho effron
tery to assert that “it was not designed by the
Constitutionalist, nor would it have byen just, to
charge upon the Whigs of Georgia nn advocacy
of tho Wilinot Proviso." In other woids, the
Whigs of Georgia, numbers, thousands if not tens
thousands beiiece in the constitutionality and
expediency of the measure, but from party policy
do not advocate R. Hero then, whilst they at
tempt to deny having rondo the chaigc, in the
same articlo they reiterate it in stilt more offen
sive nnd insulting word*.
I defy these Editors, with the ehargo upon
their lips, to point to a single IFhig, of the num
bers and thousands which they have libelled, and
say with Nathan, "Thou art the man." Having
done tills, if they do not receive a reproof suffici
ently sticking to convince them of the falsity of
the charge, then I will agree that the charge is
trup. They dare not do this, and yet through
the columns of a licentious press, they do dnre to
libel “numbers, thousands, if not tens of thou
sands," of the freemen of Georgia.
But your neighbours, after having indorsed the
charge of the Constitutionalist, and reiterated it,
in more offensive words than ever in tho face of
truth, their own columns bcoring record against
them, turn about and say, “Wo never said that
the Whigs of Georgia believe in its constitution*
lity or expediency.” This is too shallow an ar
tifice to evade the truth and dodge their responsi
bility. They did not charge the IVhig party of
Georgia, but they did charge a majority qf that
party, if tens of thousands cover a majority, of be
ing untrue to the South on that question.
do not believe thnt such charges from such
sources can find a lodgment for a tnoinrnt in tiro
honest hearts of the honest Democrats of the land,
and I rffjpcal to them to say whether, iu the ranks
of the Whigs throughout Georgia, with whom
they associate daily in their walk and conversa
tion, they can put their finger on a tl'hig and
he is not true to the Rights of the South."
you cannot find one, what becomcsof the chnrgc
against numbers, Uututandt, if nut tens of thousands
your feUow*ciUuus, linked in destiny with
yourselves? At»d when the charge of abolition-
Utn is brought against a portion of your fellow*
citizens, with whom you honestly diffci in opin
ion, remember. Democrats, that the Democratic
party established the first 7\rritorial Government
under the restrictions of the ••ItVmot Proviso,” ami
that a Democratic President sanctioned that Law
and established the prcccdcut, that Congress has
the right to Legislate and to preclude the South
front an equal participation with the North, in the
rights and bcnefiis of our Territorial Domain.
Your neighbors affect “to feel a scorn for a por
tion of the people of Bryan!” A hissing viper,
biting against a file, has blunted its envenomed
fury, and with its bruised head, under the heel
of indignant patriotism, may wag its tail in scorn.
Who cares ?
In conclusion, let me assnre you that the Whigs
of Bryan are ready for the conflict, anxious for
the ides of October—our armour is bright and
bristling—our banner is thrown ^o the breeze,
bearing our motto "Xemo me impure lace si it,"

The accounts from the seat o^urar are so specific
and wear such an aspect of authenticity, that,
however uuwiiling we maybe to credit their fatal
import, it sccins impossible to doubt the general
accuracy of tho intelligence. Desperate and brief
the struggle ha* been; brilliant in its early suc
cesses; glorious in the noble heroism displayed by
tbe Huugarian patriots. AU Europe was embla
zoned by Ihe fires which they lighted as the bea
con of liberty, and the resplendent lustre was re
flected across tbe Atlnutic to mingle with the halo
of the stars and stripes! Those fires it would
seem have been smothered—that light lias been
extinguished. For the time, at least, darkness

The painful details of imperial atrocity, conse
quent upon tbe downfall of the patriots, havcyit
to be received. One may imagine Havnau revel
ing in blood. Executions have probably given
wray to tbe more summary process of massacres.
Many a noble bead lias doubtless fallen already,
Kossuth’s wife and family arc said to have fallen
into tbe bands of the conquerors; and the kindred
of that heroic chieftain, first in the array of free
men and patriots amongst his countrymen, have
probably gone amongst the first to join the army
of martyrs. But every drop of such blood, shed
in such a cause, will be like dragon’s teeth to
spring up hereafter in the form of armed men.
There are charges of treason against Geoboet
-charges which we are reluctant to believe. It
would be unfortunate, indeed,if the splendid epi
sode uf Hungarian independence should be sullied
by the taint of treachery. Let Despotism boast
only of its power to crush. With its armed
legions aud its destructive armament* it inay do
that, but let It have no triumph over Freedom
through the faithlessness of her votaries.
