and Immediately seated themselves In chairs lashed to

and commenced Iho ascent. Having, aa you know, one
disabled walking-beam, I also sooted myself In a chair.
The distance up ts about a mite, and steep as It la, you
mouat directly Instead of winding your way. Tbe first
thirty or forty rods Is through volcanic cinders, end easy
enough. You then reach Urn broken, sharp scoria, much
of which furnishes but an uncertain foothold. Aud here
I’ discovered an unoxpocted difficulty. Tbe carriers,
having bean np with a party that preceded us, were so
jided and exhausted that 1 aaw bow Impossible It was to
reach the summit In that way. I therefore alighted, and
taking an arm of each of them trudged upward, at the
hazard or doing myself Irreparable Injury. In the
meantime the ladles, who were a quarter of a mile
Ihedvanto, were also In tbe bauds of weary, panting
carrion, whoso progress was slow and difficult.—
gathered breath and strength to struggle on. 1 was in
finitely relieved, therefore, when the ladles disappeared,
for then I knew that they were safely up. The last quar
ter of smite was rendered easier by tbe snow Into which
steps were made. The ascent Is usually aocompUslted In
three-quarters of an hour, but In consequence of the ex
haustion of our carriers, we were on hour and a quarter
^Bul'onoo up, wo breathed freely, and the vlewwaa
so sublimely interesting that we forgot our tolls and perils.
There was a mild atmosphere and a bright sun. We first
glanced over tbe broad bay and broader eampagna. which
spread out under our feet. Large towns, In the distance
looked llko a single mansion, or at most a mansion around
which out houses clustered. Tbe city or Naples with ita
400,000 Inhabitants, seemed but a smalt compact village,
and tbo U. 8. ship Independence, moored In the bay. was
no larger, apparently than a pilot boat. More Immediate
ly below us are tbe cities and towns buried by the lava
or the different eruptions, over which modern town* (ex
cepting Pompeii) nave been built, In anticipation, U
would seem, at some future day, of a similar fate.
’Having surveyed, with our eyes, the surrounding scene
ry, wa followed the Guide to tbo Crater, to obtain a good
look into which we had to walk several rods on its rim,
with a yawning gulph on one aide and a frightful preci
pice on tho other.
* Vesuvius is now In repose. It haq, however, two lungs
or breathing places, from which columns of smoke are
for ever ana ever ascending. This smoke Is so strongly
Impregnated with sulphur as to strangle those who inhale
Ik The lava on the sides of the crater is the color of
brimstone. An egg placed In crevices near the top will
roast tn a few minutes. Metallc substances change color
by a moment's exposure to this atmosphere, indeed,
- this change occurs without exposure, tor on our return.
Mrs. H. found that her purse, (a highly polished steel
one,) which had not been out of her pocket,
ened and spoiled.
' Some adventurous gentlemen attempted to descend a
few rods into tho crater, but were soon driven back by the
smoke, the density of which shut off the view into the
pot where the molten leva la boiling.

Tbe new steamship now - buildlng~l
Webb of New. Yoik for the SavannahUm
about 1700 tons.
Tbe above Is from tbe Charleston Courier and b cor
rect if tbe mode of rating tho Charleston steamers Is used
—that U, carpenter’s measure. For Instance tbe Union
and Jemu Adgcr are rated at 1300 tons, when they are
not fer from 1200, Custom House register. They are
both smaller ships than tbo Ftpride and Aiekame, which
register something under 1300 Iona, but are so rated In
round numbers. Tbe Southerner when the first began to
run wm called something under 800 tons, we think, but
bM now grown to 1000. The Merien which rates at the
Custom House somewhere about 1000 tons Is called 1200.
This puffing and straining may have a temporary effect
but does not wear well or do any good with the well in
formed and thinking traveller, but rather tbo reverse.
The new Savannah steamer will register at tbe Custom
House between 1300 and 1400 tons, but will probably be
called In round numbers the same as the Florida and
Alabama, 1300,
We observe, by the way, In Illustration of these re
marks, that the dimensions of the new steamer Jemu
Adger, as stated In tbe Charleston Courier, ore: 215 feet
loug on deck, breadth of beam 23 feet, and depth of hold
21 feet 3 inches. The State of Georgia, as staled by tbe
Philadelphia Merth'American, measures 214 feet long, 34
feet beam and 21 feet deep. Yettbe former Is advertised
m measuring 1300 tons and the latter M 1200-more of a
distinction than a difference,
Fbee-Masoeet in Bouth-Casolixa^-Wo arc much

frilly appreciated by his brethren, has recently become a

of bis own remarks:

“An old roan” writing to the Boston Daily Adeerticer,
Mya that In hla opinion three results will have been pro
duced by Koasuth’a visit and reception, in tbla country.—
First, a decline of reverence for the hitherto sacred prin

Uons of Europe m to our real neutrality, and a suspicion
or our true faith In treaties; and third, the still stronger

and the sUU further postponement of the day of her
