that we were visited on Sunday night with a good
frost; and the indications, as we write, are, that we
shall have a heavier ono to-night.

both medical and surgical care to those persons
who having means, aro not nevertheless in a condi
tion to bo comfortriile at their own homes or board-
■) ing houses. Such an establishment as this has
long been a desideratum in this city, and we pre
dict for the entorpriaing gentlemen who have em
barked in the undertaking, undoubted success.
Quick Work.—An order was forwarded from N.
.York, fivo weeks since, to England, for'fine Irish
butter, and the steamer Pacifio brought tho article
last Saturday week.
The Economist lately gavo two or three recipes
for manuracbiring English Port Wine. Tho samo
paper states, this week, that there are some eight-
teen or twenty establishments in London which
paid duly in 1633 for 148,840 gallons of manufac
tured wines. Sinco then, tho annual produce has
increased to about 600,000, oi which about 60,000
gallons aro British port. Ginger, green ginger,
orango, raisin, black currant, white currant, rod
currant, raspberry, cowslip, elder, champagne, port,
shorry and tent, are all manufactured in ono houso
in London. They are all mado much in tho Bamo
way, and about oqually spirituous, and flavored
with tho fruit from which thoy aro named. Cham-
pagno is made from French grapes; cape wine is
used in tho manufacture of port and sherry; tent is
mado from the black cherry. British port and
sherry can be sold retail at Is. 2d. a bottle. British
champagne is sold to tho trade at 21s. to 28s. adoz.,
but tho cousumer has to pay 4s. to 6s. a bottle for it.
These facts are now stated os an argument for tho
reduction of tho import duties upon foreign wines.
Liberal Donations.—Wo loam from tho Boston
papers that Dr. George C. Shattuck, of that city,
bas given $7,000 to Dartmouth College, for tbo
erection of an observatory, on tho condition that tbo
trustees of tho college will raise the further sum of
$3,000 for tho purchase of instruments.
Wo also loam that James Smith of Philadelphia,
lately a citizen of Leicester, Mass., (mb offered to
the trustees -of tho academy in tho latter place, a
donation of ten thousand dollars, on condition that
by other subscriptions tho samo shall be increased
to fifteen thonsand, before January 1st, 1853.
Cuba.—Tho New-York Express in publishing
tho recent lottor of Mr. Conrad, Acting Secretary
of State, to George Law, Esq,, respecting tho
Crescent City affair, says:
"In this connection the fact may be mentioned
that a story is in circulation to the effect that tho
American Ambassador at Madrid has lately renew
ed the offer of 8180,0004)00 made under Mr. Polk’s
Administration, for the Island of Cuba. Tho policy
of this Administration has been, and now is, that
of Mr. Adams and Mr. Clay, when the former was
President, snd the latter Secretary of tho State,
viz: that Cuba should not bo annexed to any Euro
pean Powers. It,has not, wo think, contempt *

ponse of one hundred and eighty millions of dollars,
and of course has no power of itself to mako such
a purchase. Congress could alone do this in con-

The Iron Market in England.—Subjoined is
well-timed note on tho present aspects of tho iron
market:
Liverpool, Tuesday, Oct. 12.
Sir—As considerable consumers of Iron, v._
crave your oarnest and immediate attention to the
extraordinary speculative character of the iron mar
ket at present. It is quito truo, thoro has been a
largo consumptive demand, but tho daily advanco
that fenow demanded arises from tho purchases of
parties who are simply speculators, audit has be
come such a mania, that, wo know one clerk in l
merchant's office who is a largo operator in iron
scrip. It may be said this must run its course, but
in tno meantime it must check legitimate business,
and will end in tho ruin of many thoughtless indi
viduals. At present it is all coulcur do rose, and
ono man, who a. few months ago was possessed of
littio or no moans, stands to win £40flOb already.
Funerrl op the Grand Duke.—Tho London
Times, speaking of tho preparations for tho funeral
oi tho Duko of Wellington, says:
Six regiments of infantry, oigbt squadrons

Wo have also reason to believe that tho Field-

companion in arms \ and that representatives from
those foreign sovereigns in whoso armies his graco
bore the rank of Field-Marshal, will assist at tho
