There are other Influences and interests which af

Weed So Co., and it ia n universally known fact,
that it was through their exertions, mainly, that
Scott ob’ained tho nomination in the Baltimore
Convention. Not that thoy had any affection for
General Scott. Not at all; but that thoy thought
he was the best man they could get to use to “kill
off,” (that was tho phrase) firet Millard Fillmore,
who signed -ho Compromise Bills, including tho
Fugitive Slavo Law, and second, to punish the
master spirit of Fillmore’s Administration—tho la

Railroad meeting' in Bulloch County*
At an adjourned Railroad Meeting, convened at
Statesboro’ on tho 2d day of November, 1852, to
tako into consideration tho propriety of running a
railroad through Bulloch county; when, on motion
would pass nearly through Edon in Brvan county, 1
through Hinearilio in Liberty, and Holmesvillo in
Appling. It would touch tho northwest corner of 1
Ware, cut off triangular sections from Irwin and
Lbwndee—the largest from tho latter. It would I
then pass through tho centre of Thomas a fow miles
nortllTThoniaitvillo, and lastly through Denton
gradually approaching tlio Florida lino, which it.
would reach at its western torminos. It ia perfect-.
ly evident that this road would accommodate ar
immense amount of merchandise, both through
local, place travellers much nearer New-Orleu.w,
than by auy other routo that can bo named, and
control that coasting business soon destined to be
come vastly important along tho western shore of
the Florida peninsula. It would, too, be m tho ex
act locality for future extension towards Pensacola.
Such was then our opinion, and puch is now our
opinion ai to tho best route, its own merits alone
boiug considered. Savannah should not at this lato
day surrender her commanding position in favor of
any port whatever to tho south of her—above all,
when travellers on this air lino would bo well on
their way with tho speed of the locomotive, before
tho speed of steamoni could convoy thorn to their
destination at any more southerly point on tho
coast.
Not long after tho abovo extracts were written,
Mr. Kelly, the Belgian agent, and Col. Tift pre
sorted themselves in this city, with tho Savannah
So Albany charter, and with a proposition to raise
$2,000,000 towards building a road hence to Al
bany. Tho steps thon taken are familiar to our
reader*. The route which they proposed seemed
to promise nearly all the advantages offered by the
ono just now described j and certainly tho pros
pect ot bo heavy a foreign subscription seemed a
sufficiently strong inducement to decide in favor
of tho. Albany route, having in view alwaya its fu
ture extension across tho Chattahoochee. It is not
true, however, as has been asserted, that this project
was trumpod up as an offset to, and in consequence
of, the Brunswick project. So far, at least, as Sa
vannah was concerned, it resulted alone from tho
accidental appearanco here at that time of tho gen-
tlcmcn above named, with a charter in their bands,
and a proposition resting solely on its own merits.
Instead of waiting to bear from the negotiations
of Mr. Ksily, another proposition will, wo under
stand, bo made to. our citizens this morning, by gen
tlemen for whom wo entertain the highest respect
and in whom all repose tho highest confidence. It
is for tho city to subscribe half a million or more at
once, and to construct without delay, a road to tho
Altemaba—at some point, say, not far abovo Fort
Barrington. It is proposed to leave it to tho future
to develope, whether tho road shall be continued
on towards Pensacola, under the Albany charter,
or whether a new charter shall be obtained from
tho next Legislature. It is not without great re
luctance that wo find ourselves constrained to dif-
fer from thoeo with whom we should gladly con
cur in opinion. It appears to us, that this proposi
tion Is not exactly in the line of safe precedents.
We confess that we should prefer to soo such a
subscription coupled with tho condition that other
parties should subscribe at least a million and a
half towards the same object. It is said that if
fifty or sixty miles of this road bo built to tho Aita-
inaha river, it will bo suro to go forward, and so
wo believe. But it is by no moans certain that the
city of Savannah bersolf will not bo compelled to
carry It on unaided and unsupported. Wo do not

the following words:—“The beauty of Israel is
slain upon the high places,—how aro the mighty

tremely well conceived, and tho character of the
illustrious statesmen, in all its bearings, was touch
ed upon with a judicious propriety, in admirablo
harmony with tho grave solemnity of tho subject.
Avoiding all extremes, the eminent services of tho

his massivo genius was duly honored, and tho great

Tho Glorious Statesman
The character of Mr. Webster has recently
received now developments. Every body knew
how great he was; bat it was only tho few
who knew how many excellent and endearing
traits ho had—bow much magnanimity, forbear
ance, gentloneaB, and kind regard for others. Wo
hesitate not to say, that, if as much had been known
about him before tho Presidential nomination, os
now, not all tho efforts of ail tho designing men in the
United States could have kept him from receiving
tho almost unanimous support of the Whigs in the
Baltimore Convention.
We give below a letter, which adds so much to
tho accumulating mass of evidcnco in his iavor,
that we cannot refrain from laying it before our
readers. It shows how truly the mind and hoart oi
this great man wero always fixed upon the welfare
of tho wholo country. Mr. Webstek, like Mr.
Dickinson, had mado a still more distinguished sa
crifice of himself on tho altar of public duty; but
we find no allusion to himself—only admiration for
another. Mr. Dickinson deserved woll this com
pliment.
The letter was written to Senator Dickinson just
ns Mr. Webster was leaving tho Senate to take
his place as Secretary of Stale. Its allusion to
painful occurrences in tbo past, is tho charge
brought by Mr. Dickinson against Mr. Webster in
regard to tho Ashburton treaty and to tho strong
language in which they wero repelled.

The paragraph about the scarcity of shipping
which appeared io tho Republican on tho 29th ult.

problematical whether they can afford you much

was 591, of which 30 were steamers, 132 ships, 94
