Resolution! wore introduced by Dr. Scxeven to
whlchMr. Cutler offered subetitutoe. In many
respects both sots Of resolution* looked towards tbo
attainment of tbo samo objects, whilo there aro ono
or two points of difference, which wo think can be
easily adjusted.
’ Wo presume that tho whole subject will bo easily
disposed of this morning. Throe millions of dol*
lars will build a first class road front Savannah to
tho Chattahoochoe, on an air lino towards Pensa
cola, while at the samo time tho most fertile ana
Woalthyoftho Southern tier of counties in Geor
gia will be aooommodatod. Wo think tho proper
policy to bo pursued, will bo adjusted on something
liko tho following basis:
jRrai—That tho City of Savannah put down One
million of dollars for such a road, provi
ded, that other parties will put down Two
' millions for tho samo object.
Second—Tint the parties subscribing will avail
themselves of tho Savannah and Albany
J.. . charter, provided, that tho owners of it,
will permit their road to be built on or
noar ah air line towards Pensacola, or in
. v - 1 other words, that it shall not bo required,

So far as wo can judge, thoso are tbo ideas gen
erally entertained, and wo think them correct. To
accomplish such an object, Savannah can better af
ford to subscribe one million now, than half a mil
lion sixteen yearn ago. Moreover, a subscription
|o this extent will bo sore to accomplish all wo can
desire. ' ..
Dedication of the Cemetery.
The dedication of tho Laurel Grove Cemetery
catno off yesterday, according to tho programme
of services already noticed. Tho occasion was
both solemn and interesting, and will loavo a last-
. ing impression on the minda of thoso who were
present. The glory of a superb day, and the autumn
loaves falling noar by, added their own softening
effect to the aceno.
! The poem of tho Hon. R. M. Charlton bad but
ono prominent defect, and that is an unusual one—
brevity. Its appositonoes, its felicitous illustrations,
ind the grace and cose of its diction, particularly
recommended it. It was listened to with unalloyed
satisfaction throughout.
The following are tho opening linos of the poem:
1 . « When, weary with tbo toil of day,
Han turn*, at eve, hi* homeward way,

Its sweet roraetrulneas of woes;

And further on the poem says, of those who shall

- Having not long since been kindly permitted by
tjjb author to look over tho MSS., we have thought
it no broach of • courtesy to quote from it the
abovo passages.
The discourse of Judge Jackson was worthy of
its author. Happy in all his allusions, tho discourse
was all that could bo desired in the construction of
its different parts, and in chasto and appropriate lan
guage, Tho orator succeeded well in touching
with a master’s hand the chords of human sympa

Irish Potatoes—Second Crop.—A friend has
loft at our office Borne Irish potatoes grown by
Cius. Grant, E>q., on, the Springfiold plantation,
near this city. They were planted on the 27tb
July last, have turnod out well, and are sold daily
in tho market. This successful experiment oi Mr.
Grant is interesting, and affords a useful hint to
others. Tho first crop should be planted by or be
fore tho )s$ March. A crop, planted in April, finds
probably toomuch natural creative energy, result
ing from the combined heat and moisture, and
yields little elm than a crop of potato tops. Later
in tbo mason, however, when the natural condi
tions aro changed, tbo productive energy takes a
different direction.
Montgomery Iron Wore*.—We call tho par
ticular attention of all interested, to tbo advertise
ment of the Winter Iron Works at Montgomery,
(Ala.) From information at our command, we are
persuaded that tho gang and single engines of Mr.
Cooper, with their direct action, ore destined to
supercede most others now in use. At all events
they havo made a decidedly favorable impression
wherever used, and such is the prediction of many.

which if decidod for tho plaintiff would make tho
Bank liable at all hazards, must bo reserved for tho
future consideration of the whole Court. This oaso
presented questions of very considerable interest to,
tho community, for it was obvious that business to
a very largo extent waS often transacted in this

Original Revolutionary Incident.—Tho Now
Haven Courier gives the following account of the
siege of Yorktown.in 1781, which has never before
boon in print, and illustrates the differonco between
theory and practico:
With Hamilton, Knox, and others, there were
present, behind a redoubt ot hogsheads and pipes of
land, about 400 American troops. A general order
iad been given, that when a shell was seen, they
might cry out a «AeM—but not to cry a shot, when
a shot was seen. Tho reason of this distinction
was, that a shell might bo avoided, but to cry a
shot would only mako confusion and do no good.
This order waa just then boing discussed, Colonel
Hamilton remarking that it Boomed unsoldierliko to
halloo usbell, while Knox contended the contraiy,
and that the order was wisely given by Gen. Wash
ington, who cared for tho file of tho men.
The argument thus stated waa progressing with
a slight degreo of warmth, when suddenly, spat!
spat! two shells fell and struck within the redoubt.

Knox and Hamilton were united in action, how
ever differing in words, for both got behind the
blinds; and Hamilton, to be yot more secure, held
on behind Knox, (Knox being a very largo man,
and Hamilton a small man.) Upon this, Knox
struggled to throw Hamilton offj and in the effort
limself (Knox) rolled Hamilton off towards the
shells. Hamilton, however, scrambled back again
1 rahind the blinda. All this was done rapidly, for
in two minutes tho shells burst, and threw their
deadly missiles in all directions. It was now safe

that on looking oronna, and finding not a man

carpenter. Lord Campbell and Dickens were both
reporters for tbo Morning Chronicle. Gibson, the
sculptor, was a cabinet-maker. Carlcton was a
poor Irish peasant’s son, and has painted bis own

were both sons of small farmers—the one in Sussex,

testators. Threo gentlemen of Alexandria by will
left very considerable sums of roony for tho bene
fit of that city, but owing to somo technicalities
these wills woro sot aside, and persons whom tho
testators probably had good reasons for not favor
ing, received the money. The Gazette remarks,
that in each of theso cases tho will was written by
tbo testator himself. Had shrewd lawyers been
employed, tho wills might havo boon rendered
law-proof. It seems to have become quite fashion
able lately, for courts to sot aside the wills of |
wealthy men who bequeath their hoard to ebarita-
blo or publio institutions.
Woman’s Riobts.—David Hale, late editor of
tho Journal of Commerce, once wrote a jeu d"esprit
on tho “ Rights of Woman,” in which ho showed
that tho balance of wrongs was decidedly on tho
side oi men. When the Bimple question of supe
riority is at issue, the men always have to givo np.
If ladies and gentlemen meet on the sidewalk, who
has to tare out 1 if thoro are not seats onongh for
ail the company, who has to stand upl When
thoro is danger to face, who must go forward 1 If
thero is curiosity to gratify, who goes behind 1 If
thero is too much company for tho first table, who
eats at tho second 1 Who has always the right
hand nnd tho most respectable position 7 Wo could
mention a hundred other cases, in which, on tho
simple question of right, every thing is yielded to
the woman.
But there aro many cases in which the condition
of men is still worse. For instance, if, on any pub
lio occasion, n powst a church, or a seat any'
yvbere, be occupied by men over so respectable or
aged, stnirkly little beauty trips along and presents
herself at the top of the seat, and they must ali
jump up and dear out os if they had been shot.
Especially ought it to be noticed, that, when matri
monial negotiations are to bo made, tbo wholo bur
den of performing the deiicato and often very em
barrassing parts of making proposals is thrown upon
the men, while the women sit and say no, no, no (
no, as long as they liko, and never say yes, uni
