The New St. John’s Church.
Thfaboautiful Christian templo fa now drawing
noar it* completion, and tbo stagings within are re
moved, so that a satisfactory view can bo obtained.
The whole South cannot boast of a more thorough
ly bollt, or exquisitely beautiful and appropriate odi-
fice. It is in tho early English style of Gothic—
that which prevailed in England from the yoar
|90O to the year 1300 of tho Christian era. The
characteristic features of this style have been faith
fully adhered to, without any compromises for tho
sake of saving expenso. It is not, liko the later
Gothic, loaded with ornament. It has no flying
harnesses, nor do all its buttresses even, terminate
in pinnacles. It has not those gorgeous windows,
with mullions and transoms, and flamboyant and
other tracery; nor has it, in any part, those multi
tudinous and ornate details which so distinguish
tho later styles. But it has a comploto unity in its
plan—a simply sovore and chasto beauty, which,
like.eyery thing intrinsically fino, pleases always
more, the moro it is studied. If ono should find
fsult with the elegant proportions of this church, ho
tnay at once pronounce that ho has very little tasto
in architecture. Borne might say tho tower is too
massive. Toko it away and put a thinner one
them, and it would look so mean that it would be
gladly dispensed with. The body of the edifice,
somo may say,'is too low for tho towor. It is just
high enough—and tho adjustment hero is ono of
its principal charms. Truo, it is surroundod with
fences, and accumulations of lumber, and wbbish,
Tsko all these besetting things away, and laydown
a neat pavemont, and the harmony and simple
beauty of the whole structure will stand confessed
in a moment. And yet, many persona will find
that it will require both time and study to compre
hend fully, or rather to appreciate properly, tho per
fections of all parts of tho building. These things
* grow on one," to use the common expression.
Thoy explain themselves gradually; but wo ven
ture to say, for examplo, that tho simple and sovero
beauty of the roof, as viewed from within, will
hardly bo comprehended without frequent inspoc-
aislo firsifset wide, and two aide
™»ot wide next tho walls. . VV
Immediately in front of tho roar entrance stands
tbo font, raised upon an octagonal platform. It
will bo a beautiful thing of its kind, made of Nova
Scotia stone, finely cut and omamentod with traco-
ry panda, mouldings, &c. Tho finish from the
sido windows to tho floor is an oak walnscotUng,
with a stone cornice forming the sill for tho win
dows. Tho chnncol is twenty-fivo by sixtoen and
a half loeton the outaido, and fifteen by twenty-two
foot on tho insido. Its side walls are somewhat
highor than those of the navo, and its roof much
stoeper, and finished intomally in the samo man
ner as tho bays of the main roof. Tho comers
havo each a buttress, capped with a pinnaclo simi
lar to thoso on tho comers of tho nave. Tho chan
cel is connected with the navo by a largo arched
opening, twenty-two feet wido and forty feet high,
and ornamented with wood moulding, with a small
cluster of mouldings beneath, mado in plnator. Tho
floor of the chancel is olovated two feet above the
floor or the navo.

DESCRIPTION OP THE CHURCH.
Its general plan consists of a Nave, Chancel and
Tower, with two small attachments filling up the
angles formed by the nave and chancel; of these,
ono is for a porch through which to enter the nave
in the rear, and the other for a vestry room. Tho
tower is situated on tho front, projecting its wholo
nzo from the front wall of the nave. It is twenty
feet .square, besides the buttress projection. The
elevation of tho tower fa divided into four sections
Or stories, and a spire. Tho first or ground section
fa the vestibule of the main entrance to the church.
It has three doors, eight feet wide and thirtoen feet
high to the apex of the arch. The second section
fa for an organ loft and fa connected with the navo
by a lofty arched opening. This section fa lighted
by one large window in front, divided by a mulllon
into two bays with its head filled with quatrefoil
tracery, and there are two small lancet windowson
the tides. The third section fa the clock section,
though no arrangement will bo made at present for
a dock. In place of the dials are small lancet
windows which can bo replaced with clock dials
when wanted. The fourth section fa tho bell sec
tion, it fa thirty feet high in the dear, and has eight
large windows filled with open Venetinn work. It
fa made thus open to allow free egress of sound.
Tho bell deck fa mado strong enough to support a
chime oi ten bells, weighing ten or twelve thous-
sand pounds. Surmounting the wholo, fa a wood
spire, the elevation of which fa seventy-three
foot, crowned with a gilded Latin cross, the top of
which fa ono hundred and fifty-seven feet above the
tide walk. The buttruasos on the comers of the
tower project three foet at the bottom, and stand at
right angles with each other. They meet at the
top by offset!* at regular stages and ore capped with
pinnacles. The offset cape, cornices, hood-moulds,
or label-heads of the doors and windows, belting
i, and water table, are of Connecticut brown

An alms basin of solid gold was used on this oc
casion, for tho first time. It was sent from tho Uni
versity of Oxford to the Protestant Episcopal Church
Tho Nave fa ninety-three by fifty-one feet, exclu
sive of the buttress projection. The sido walls
have an elevation of twenty-six and a half feet
above tb6 pavement, and the apex of tho roof fa
fifty and a half feet above. It fa forty-eight by
ninety feet in tho clear inside, twenty-four and
btii feet high to the top of hammer beam, and for
ty-eight feet from tho floor to the apex of the roof.
The • outside corners are covered with buttresses
projecting at an angle of forty-five degrees with
.the m n i n walls and are carried above the top of tho
main wall and capped with crocketed pinnacles.
Tho side walls are flanked with six buttresses, on
each tido, which terminate below the cornice. The
cornico consists of a series of trefoil arches support
ed by corbels and crowned with a moulding. The
tide walls are pierced with twelve narrow lancet
vrindows, and the front wall with two windows of
larger dimensions. Thoy are all capped with label
beads of stone on the outside and plaster hood
mouldings on the inside. Tbo most striking fea
ture of the interior fa the roof with its peculiar
finitii. It fa constructed on the hammer beam prin
ciple, braced and supported by circles and arches
firmly secured together with iron bolts and straps,
both above and below the hammer beam. The
spandrel arch below the hammer beam reels
upon a atone corbel built out from the wall.—
The above described work is simply cased over
showing the wholo construction and finish of tho
timbers, which together with tho panol work in tho
bays or spaces between the bents fa finished with
the Georgia pine, oiled and varnished and left on-
painted. All this presents a vory fine appearanco
from its warm tint and the beautiful grain of the
wood. Tho angle formed by the intersection of the
roof and tide walls fa ornamented with a cornice
consisting of a series of trefoil arches resting upon
corbels, The chancel rail fa of open tracery sup
ported by small colnmns. Tbo chancel is lighted
v# a triplet lancet window, which fa lofty, and
presents a very, fine appearance. It fa to bo filled
with started glass! containing panels filled with
rosettes, and scriptural and church emblems. Bo-
Jow thii Window, which fa some ton foot from the
floor, stands tho altar, behind which is an altar
soreen, which fa divided into three broad panels
With tracery heads, and crowned with crocketed
gables and finiafa. Each panol fa flanked with a
small buttress. The altar fa omamentod with
flowing, open work tracery. The chancel fa fur
nished with gothic chairs, credence table, &c. Im
mediately in front of tho rail, on a platform pro
jecting out into the nave, stands tho pulpit on the
loft and tho reading desk on the right.
The pulpit is octagonal in shape, standing on an
octogonal platform. It has a cluster of eight col
umns, from, the top of which spring eight span
drels, which Bipport the upper part of tho pulpit
with winding steps, leading to it. The reading
desk fa simply a small desk with clustered col
umns and spandrels raised upon a platform eight
inches high. All tho tide and front windows are
to be filled, with stained glass of a light brown color,
with borders of pot metal glass of various colors, with
a running vine worked into them, and supported
with load saab, cutting tho glass into small lozen
ges. The porch and vestry room are each ton by
twolyo fecl inside. Each have two doors, loading
one (tem without and tho other into the church,
betide a small door from the vestry room to the
chancel. The church fa ventilated et each window
on the tides, and afao by a trefoil opening near the
ridge pf the roof opening into the third section of
the tower. It fa made oi wood, and painted to im
itate stone. Acroes thh east end of tho nave fa a
gallery projecting from the wall seven arid a half
feet, and supported by an open screen extending to
the floor forming an inner vestibule. This screen
fa mado bold and hoavy, and ornamented with
heavy, tracery work with arched openings in front
of each aisle, Resting upon this screen fa thoi
