This work is one of singular iotorest, and ono

ages and adventures herein detailed, are those of
tho members of the society of Jesus, in an age when
all its membera acted with tho devotion qnd under

published before, with errors, are here presented in
an authentic shape for the first time.
The work begins by giving a compendious his
tory of the various expeditions of discovery, that of
Db Soto among them. We notice that although
Columbus visited the Gulf of Mexico, yet he was
not tho firet to explore the northern coast of it, but
it ia laid down by some one unknown, with consid
erable accuracy in a work printed at Venice in 1513.

Quite a romukable and singular book this—full
o( odd similitudes—tho whole illustrated by wood cates
engravings on almost every page. Most readere
have seen faces with a decided characteristic re-
somblanco to certain animals. Tho author of this
work is particularly apt at discovering such points
of rcserablanco. Thus he resembles some of the
German races to lions, the Prussians to cats, Ne
groes to fishes, Laplanders to reindeer, Arabs to
camels, &c. From this system of generalization,
ho descends to individuals, and traces out resem
blances between certain physiognomies, and all
sorts of birds, beasts and creeping things.
Tho work is calculated to attract readers, as it is
enlivened throughout by an ample fund of often re
curring wit and merriment of a racy and pointed
character,

This, as well as the works just noticed, arc got
up in a style that dooatbe publisher credit. We
confess we want tlmo to look over this book
thoroughly, but we might venture to recommend it
to favor, on tho strength or that clever work by tho
same author, entitled “ Alice.” It is a love tale,
proving the truth of tho popular adage that “matches
are‘'made in Heaven.” The author has shown
great good taste in going back to the past, and un
earthing some of those old and long forgotten mo-
moire left by tho French Jesuits. Ho has followed
the footsteps of Cooper and Irving, and gone forth
into tho >sylvan solitudes for subjects of interest.
Many really historical incidents are introduced into
the work, oi which tho moral is unexceptionable.
MxRCiKmit Moral*, or Thoughts for Young Men en
tering Mercantile Life. By W. H. Van Doren. New
This volume should bo placed in tho hands not
only ol all young men entering upon tho mercantile
profession, but upon any other profession. Its de
sign is to show, that “ honesty is the best policy”—
that honesty and correct moral deportment are sheet
anchors upon which alone young men can rely, du
ring the storms and the tempests that assail them in
their career, and that no merchant or man of busi-
nefe over attoinod distinction and eminence without
tho possession of those excellencies of character.—
The book is not a naked abstract of principles—it
contains numerous illustrations of important truths
drawn from historical and other sources.

The design and execution of this work, are both
to bo commended. The fables of this book, (which
will form a most acceptable Christmas present,)
have been written as a medium for instruction, and
tho enforcement of certain truths. Somo ot them
bavo been derived from JSsop, while for other illus
trations the author is indebted to American history.
The work is like a hive, in short, fillod with sweets
collected from various sources. The volumo has a
decidedly pracitad bearing, for it shows the dignity
of labor, ;he, triumphs of industry, self-reliance and
perseverance^ the heroism of patience, and the re
