Circular to American Producers*
Association for the Exhibition of all Nations,
I ADDRESS yon, on behalf of the Association fbr tbe
Exhibition or the Industry of all Nations, to Invite
your cooperation In tbe general objects of the enter
prise.
Tho building Intended fbr tbe purpooes or the ExblbL
tlon, constructed entirely of Iron and glass, will be, It is
believed, the largest and moot beautiful edifice In the
country. It cover*, on the ground floor, two and a half
acres, and, with the gallerlM, the whole space Is four
acres. Tbe mason work Is fkr advanced, and It Is to be
completed on the 21st October. Tbe main part of tbe
lion work Is contracted for,and the castings are to be de
ilvered from the 15tb October to tbe 15tb of December.
We have it In our power, therefore, to assure you, as we
have already stated to toe public, that tbe Exhibition
will certainly be opened on the 2d or May, 1853.
You arc thus offered an unequalled opportunity of ex*
hlbltlng to the vast population of this country such of
your productions as you send us, free or all charge, of
every kind whatever, from tbe time that they are deliver*
ed Into our custody until withdrawn
The Association has already announced that their ob*
Jccts are limited exclusively to exhibition. They have
no Interest whatever, direct or Indirect, In the final dls*
position to be made oraay article that may be displayed.
You are, no doubt, awaro that webave received all the
assistance from tbe public authoritlea that we have de*
aired. Tho City baa given us the lease or Reservoir
Square, tbe Slate has granted us a charter, and the Fede
ral authorities have engaged that the building shall be
made a Bonded Warehouse for the purpose of receiving
foreign article* without paying duty ro long aa they re*
main in 1L
We have the strongest assurances or support from the
representatives, in this country, of tbe principal Foreign
Powers; and we are receiving dally confirmation of the
general Interest that the subject it exciting among the
manufacturer* of Europe. A large number of artlcJee of
high value are already secured, and we have no doubt
whatever that we shall have a very extonslve represent*
atlon of all the branches of foreign industry.
The measures which we have adopted will, thus, se*
cure two great objects we bare desired to attain, viz:
the erection of a building which will be a great architect*
ural ornament to our city, and tbe exhibition, in that
building, of tbe products of the Industry of the Old
World; still, we snail fall fkr short of our mark Ifwe do
not equally succeed in obtaining the fullest and most ex*
tensive co-operation of American Industry. Our Exhlbt*
tlon would 6e extremely defective—It would be very In
ferior, both In Interest and In utility, to what we mean to
make It—If tbe great resources of the people of our own
ountry were not folly displayed In 1L
We bellevo It to be unnecessary to urge upon you
»IU 5
^ Town Interest, and what Is due to an enterprise
and meant to be carried out with no narrow
views, but on a large scale of public usefulness—all
entitle us to entertain tbe fullest conviction that you
will send ns some of tbe choicest specimens of your
skill, and that you will urge your friends to do the samo.
We do not doubt that such will be tho result when the
subject Is once brought fairly and folly before you; and
our only reason for addressing you thus particularly Is,
thaltho matter may not be overlooked in the press of
dally business, and that yqu may give the subject atten
tion in Ume to be folly prepared.
We enclose our General Circular, and also a form of
Application for 8pace. to which we beg your attention.
Copies of these, or of this letter, If you desire them to
send to your friends or correspondents, can be bad at
this office.
In order that we may know on what extent of coope
ration we may depend, tho favor of a reply on or before
the 25th day orNovember is asked.
I have the honor to be,
With great respect,
Your obedient servant,
THEODORE SEDGWICK
