Christmas in New York.—Our faithful Now York
correspondent, whoso Inst letter foiled to
usual Umc, sends us the following appropriate paragraph
: upon Christmas In New Yorht -, ‘
“Christmas day—the day on which I write this—Isono
of the tbreo hundred and alxty-flve, on which, some how
br other, everybody appears determined to bo happy. It
is not like a mere Thanksgiving observance—simply
synonymous with turkey eating, cider drinking, and such
other epicurean exercises. It Is not a fourth of July, foil
or pyrotechnics and ^patriotism. It is not a Now Year’s
day, moat notable for Its Imbibatory and gastronomlcal
excess; no, no, Christmas is none of these,
what may be called an Intellectual, spiritual and soften-
. In* Influence, of its own, to which no other day In
year inky rightfully lay claim. The peace on earth and
good will to men, vouchsafed to the worid on the plaltta
, i ■ of Bethlehem near, nineteen centuries since, are not
words Idly uttered,’so long as Christmas, with its hal-
1 lowed- associations, exerts the Christian inflnence
should oxert In a Christian land. Men’s puree strings,
mi that day, sewn to relax a little the miserly grip, to
give tho more generous feelings or tho heart freer scope.
Man Instinctively draws nearer to his fellow man, as If
our very nature wore irresistibly Impelled by the sacred
' associations of the season, to imitate iu somo humble de
gree, the. unfathomable loro which God vouchsafed'to
foUeu man on the ever memorable and ever solemn oc
casion, which this blessed anniversary tho whole world
designs should commemorate.
The merchant forgets awhile bis goods, tho banker his
- iioto books, tho broker his stocks, the laboring man his
dally care and struggles—ono and all, to bury the
“Battle of Life” in tho genial calm, the peaceful
respite, tho consoling reflections, which the time and
the occasion are so apt to eVoke.— There is no petty
difference among the different denominations of Chris
tians oven, respecting the propriety of the obser
vance of Christmas day. Roman Catholic, as well as
i Protest aut, halla It with aa glad a heart, and wllh
as reverential n feeling of respect. Sectarianism has no
place, at the altar,on that day; all meet;on common
ground, to commemorate the never dying love of a Ro*
. deemer, and to mingle whatever of earthly happiness
' God baa graciously given us, with becoming meditations,
upon tho ransom of which this day signalizes tbo pur
chase, by the priceless blood of the Saviour.”
Sir Archibald Alison ok tub United Statxs.—
1 ' 8onie ten years ago, says the Baltimore American, Mr.
/ Archibald Alison, a lawyer of Edinburgh, wrote a Ills-
. tory'of Europe which was reprinted In thla country, and,
notwithstanding its numerous untruths about America,
was sold In immense quantities. Mr. Alison was a writer
.iu Blackwood, and, or course, a sturdy Tory. Intlmohe'
became quite fomous at home, and was knighted by her
' Majesty. Since tho addition or the title to his name 8lr
. Archibald has taken up the theme of history at the pe
riod where he' dropped it, and has published a volume
or two by way of continuation^
The preliminary chapter in bis last volume Is devoted
to the United States.
It was a wise critic who said that 4 * the beginning of
- knowledge Is tho end of rhetoric.” Sir Archibald should
■ recollect this. There Is a turgid piling of . eplthetlcal ag
ony In.this chapter which is worthy of a dluner-table
speech from “Mlcawber” in Australia. Nor should Sir
j - Archibald forgot that, although Walpole long ago said
u history If a lie,” there are now-a days so many more
opportunities for detecting and exposiug falsehood than
I 1 in Yyalpole’a time, that a mau who deliberately or Igno-
rantly vilifies a great nation elands a chanco of becoming
. a very contemptible person eveu daring Ills life.
We offer the following sentences from ihls preliminary
chapter to show our readers a specimen of tbo history,
- which they will doubtless soon be called upon by somo
enterprising publisher to purchase. Our readers wlU ob-
. , K serve that therejls hardly a consecutive sentence that
: '* does not contain a falsehood. Each ono nay contain a
grain of truth, bat that grain of truth is immensely al
loyed with falsehood, and hammered out by exaggera-
- Hon lntosbowy tinsel. .VjV
It Is quite folr to judge of the reliable value of the
whole work by this specimen. If the author Is so unin
formed or so,malicious In regard to the events that passed
under our own eyes, It Is very proper to conclude that he
is eqnslly Ignorant or base In relation to the concerns of
other nations with whleh'We are not so familiar. Lei the
reader determine:
“The pridclpal States of tho Union,” says 8lr Archi
bald, “have, by common consent, repudiated their State
debts as soon ss the storm or sd verslly blew; and jjooJ
. have in. some Instances resumod the payment of
interest only when the sulo of lands they had wrested
from the Indians afforded them the means of doing so,
. without recurring to the dreaded horrors of direct taxa
tion. The measures of Congress hare been so gener
ously directed by self-interest, that they have, In more
than one Initanoe, brought the confederacy to the verge
of dissolution t and the threatened separation of South
■ ’ . Carolina was only prevented from breaklug It up by the
quiet concession ortho contra! legislature. Subsequently
. t no selfish career of unbridled democracy has been still
i more clearly evinced.”
