A Western cotomporary says: "Advertising is
the trader what ploughing is to the farmer. Tbore
would bo souio natural production if tho soil of tho
earth was never broken, and it would hold about
tho same relation to tho production o( a well culti
vated garden, tha«F,tho profits of unadvertised trado
do to the advertised."
Another declares that, "Now-a-dnys nobody but
tho slowost dried-up old fossils over question the ad
vantage of advertising. Ono might with as much
propriety doubt the orldenco of his own eyes and
oars. The stylo and oxtont of a business man's ad
vertising is a sure test of his energy and capacity,
the quantity and quality of his stock, and tho
amount of business he transacts."
Prentice, of the Louisville Journal, tondors his ad
vice to the pnblie : "Never buy goods of thoso who
don't advertise. They soli so little that they have
to soil dear."
Tho Brandon (Wis) Times grows faectious on
the subjoot and vents itself as follows: "Boos it
*oy to advertise 1 Our experience teaches us that
t does. A week ago wo adrortisod for a boy to

on Monday morning on finding at our domicilo an
applicant weighing just eight pounds and a half.
We would not guarantee to all such returns by pa
tronising the printer, but this is one instanoo whero
'* was a success."
Says the Delaware Ropublioan : "Wo bollovo it is
rule, with soarcoly an exception, that in every
community the merchants who advortiso aro moat
successful, and deservedly so. They are tho men
who keep tho host stocks of goods and sell cheapest."
The inflowing comes Lorn a New York paper :
"The changes going on in society inako it necossary
for a business man to koop boforo the pcoplo. If he
expects to snocced in trade, a fair sUioment of what
he is doing, and will do, is nocssary for himself and
thoso dealing with him. He must make this state
ment, and does do it in sumo way if he sells any
thing.
'Pcoplo are quite apt to go where their attention
i called, and if they find things as represented thoy
will purchaso there in preference to spending thoir
timo seeking elsowhoro. Those whoso patronage
and influence aro of the greatost valuo never spend
too muoh time in looking up a thing. Thoy havo
learned that lime is money, and that without timo
in this world money is worthless It is conclusive
that there is tnorii as well os profit in advertising
honostly and fairly, in telling pcoplo what and how
you will do, and then doing it. Thoso who aro
willing to trade strictly upon principle can circulate
un advertisement throughout an entire community,
and it will havo just as much force as though they
spoko to each individual by word, or each visited
thoir establishment and cxaminod fur himself. This
advo. Using only amounts to the same os telling your
tatron whon he calls on you how you will soli to
tim.
"It is just to all concerned to advertise consciec^

the utmost importance."

MANUFACTURER OF
The Killing of J. J. Bryant, the New Or

We take tho following particulars of this affi'r
from tho New Orleans Times: A forged check hav
ing been somo time aiuco purred upon Brynut, by a
j ambler named Brantley, Brynnt, in a disputo with
. udgo Fred. Tat*, of Lngrango, Texas, accused him
of complicity in the affair, but tbo parties woro sep
arated by the intervention of frieuds. An oppro
brious remark of Bryant’s, however, brought them
together again, JudgyTato asking him, in a con
ciliatory tone, if ho bad maUo tho remark. A colli
sion at onco occurred, respecting wbioh accounts
differ.
However, in loss time than it takes to record it,
threo shots wore fired into Bryant’s body, ono shot
pnssing through tho heart, ono entering the right
cheek and passing through tho head, the third find
ing lodgment wo aid not loam exactly whore. Bry
ant fell dead Instantly, clutching with a denth-grip
tho T-shapod dagger with which ho had inflicted a
serious s ab in the right sldo of his opponont.
Mr. J. J. Bryant was about 66 years of age, but
bad the appearance of being much youngor. lie
)a*sod sovoral years in San Francisco, and is said to
tave spent botween fifty and a hundred thousand
dollars at an election for Mayor held in that city in
which ho was a candidate.
Notwithstanding the profession of Mr. B, he
loaves many warm friends, whom his deeds of gene
rosity end gonial temperament havo gathered round
him. During the war muoh of hid timo wns spont
in Riohmond and Mobile, and here also ho will bo
most kindly remembered.
JuJge Tate expressed doep regret upon learning
that Bryant had expired, and stated that ho shot
only in self-defence; that ho respected tho deceased
as a man very muoh.
lie has a family in LaGrnDgo, Texas.
Tho Evening Crescent sayz:
A post mortem examination was this morning hold
upon tho body of J- J Bryant, the owner of the
gambling saloon on St. Charles street, nnd who was
tilled last night at tho St. Charles hotel by Frederick
Tato, of Texas, The examination by tho flity phy
sician, Dr. Niohnls, led to tho discovery of no new
fact that waa not known boforo, namoly, that two
shots penetrated tho bodv—one just grazing tho back
)art of his nock, the other penetrating tho lobo of
he left lung, entoring lho sixth vertebra and causing
bis death. At tho timo of writing, the coroner bad
not examined any witnesses, nnd thought it doubtful
thtt any verdict would be obtained before to
morrow.
Tho condition of Judge Tato was much improvod
nt noon to-day, and ho was thought by tho attending
physicians to be out of danger.
Judgo Tato was for a long timo judge of tho Cir
cuit Court in that Stato. During the war ho com
manded a Texas regimont, and hold sovoral promi
nent positions as commandant of certain important
posts. lio was nt one timo one of the staff officers
of Gonernl Van Dorn. Judge Tato is well known
in this city as a member of tho bar, and has boon
practicing in the courts in this city for tbo past
sovon months.
