SAVANNAH DAILY REPUBLICAN, THE DAILY REPUBLICAN. SAVANNAH: FRIDAY. SKl'TRMHKU LI. I SI. 7. mI'Tr ci^Jiuus in:iiy anj county OFFICIAL ORGAN OF U.S. GOVERNMENT. m u PLATFORM. ••Lot our laws mid our institutions spi^ik not of white men, uotof red men, not of l»l>\ck men. not of men of any eomidexion; Imt like the laws of Uod— the Ten (’omnmndments and the Lord’s 1'rttTcr—let them speak of the people.” | Horace Mmn. •• Freedom of speech and of the I’ress, oduention.eipmlity beforu the Jaw. and in political rights and privileges, nro tlm rat- sentiabof auy satisfactory reeoustruetion in the South.”—l\>j>c's Utter tv General Grant, Tim LKSSOX OK TUK CALIFORNIA KLKI’TIOX The Democratic papers throughout the country are just now indulging in an un usual amount of jubilation over tlm com plete triumph they have so unexpectedly won ou the Pacific slope. To both par ties the result id the contest has been a matter of great surprise. To the Repub licans ou the Atlautic side it has been a source of deep mortification, and is a blow which the sensible lcadors of that party feclipiito keenly. Tho cveut should certainly teach tho Republican Party a Bovero lesson, and if they are wiso they will uot soon forget its precepts. Gorham, tho Republican nominee, was universally known to tho pooplo of California as a corrupt and designing politician, and ton freo use of his gold hia nomination was bolely duo, while the honest, outspoken Re publican journals refused to support Gor ham ou ttceouut of his being personally interested in gigantic schemes which, it was currently reported by members of his own party, ho contemplated to carry out at the expense of the State, involving it in an enormous debt, which millions of dollars would not liquidate. Last year tho Republican ticket suffered a severe defeat in Connecticut, and tho cause may in a great measure be attributed to tho unpopularity of several of their candidates. When a State like Connecticut can find no more honorable uud distinguished statesmen to represent tho views of tho Republican Party than R.irnum, the woolly horse and Feejee mermaid showman.a man whose proudest title is “Tho Priuco of Humbugs,” wo say emphatically tho party nomiuuliug such candidates would uot receive its just ilesirts unless it was defeated, aud de feated ignomiuiously, too. Not satisfied with the protest of Connecticut, the same disgraceful trick of palming off corrupt and uuroliablo 'men was attempted in California, nud while it would afford us plcasuro to chroniolo tho success of “tho party of progress, wo aro grati- ilud to know that tho honeuL tonueeoed in tho South, they must send us ros|»eotrtblo, faithful moil oh leaders, or bo prepared, whenever tho oleclioimnro held, to nee tho tableaux of California re- j pouted. Neither Northern or Southern iiicu of honor, wo sincerely trust, will ever willingly become tho instrument of oppression or corruption, nud wo cannot have otic without tho other. It may ho tho part of wise statesmanship nud pa triotism to consider tho utility and con- vouiouooof candidates as paramount to all other virtues or considerations; hut the verdict of the people of California is that they believe tho principles of that doetrino (also and dangerous, nud they will not barter self-respect, nor retail honor for so poor an equivalent. If wo would, ah n Nation, become purer anil nobler, our political parties must con form to truth and justice. TUK PllOSPKRITY OF OUR CITY—AN- OTI1K11 NKW LINK OK 8TK AMICUS. It affords us grent pleasure to bo nhlo to tiunoiuioo to our readers that, through tho itilluouco and onorgotic representa tions of Octavus Cohen, I£sq., one of our oldest and moat iuilucutiul merchants, tho commerce of Savannah is shortly to bo increased by tho addition of two of tho fastest, most commodious nud staunch oceau steamships that havo over crossed our bar. Tho old Propeller Line, which prior to tho war, was the Hue of Savannah aud Now York steaniships.is to he revived. Tho two first class boats, Huntsville, Captain Isaac Crowell, com- ; ninudcr. anil the Montgomery, comuinud- ! ed by Captain Thomas Lyous, which j were universally conceded by tho travel- i ling public to be tho most comfortable and luxurious boats that traversed tho Atlautic occau, will form tho now line. It will be remembered by our readers that these ships were originally built ex pressly to run botweon Savannah and New York. Roth stonmors havo been a long time on tho stocks undergoing com plete repairs, anil receiving many im- 1 provements, all of which will add to the ! comfort of passengers, whilo wo uro as sured that the accommodations nud cnbin ' furnishings will bo first class in every ro- Ispect. The fact that two such skillful and courteous officers havo been selected to command theso steamships, while ono of the most enterprising aud iudus- trious firms in our city has accept- ted tho agency, augurs well for tho i success of tho line, and gives ns assurauco that uothing will bo left undone which can add to tho comfort and nccommoila tions of the patrons of tho line, or tend to incrcnso the prosperity of our city.
