And to bound away with the eagle'* speed,
With the dead-fraught firelock in my band—
Th* only law of the l»e*ert Land’
Afar In the Desert I lor* to ride,
With the filent Huth-bov alone by my side;
O’er th* brown karro, where th* fleeting cry
Of the springbok’s fawn rounds plalntiroly ;
And the timorous quaggVs shrill whistling neigh
Is heard by Ihe fountains at twilight grey ;
Wbero the tebra wantonly tones his mane,
With wild hoof scouring the desolate plain;
And tho float-footed ostrich orer the waste
Speeds Hk* * horseman who travels in haste,
Hieing away to the home of her rest,
Where sho and her mate hare scoopol their nest,
Par hid from the pitiless plunderer’s new,
In tho pathless depths of the parched karroo.
Afar tn the Desert I lore to ride,
With the silent .'lusb-boy aloae by ary side;
Away—away—in tho wilderness rail,
Whore the white min's foot hathnerer passed,
And Ihe quivered Corancn or Bsehuan
Hath rarely crossed with his roriog clsn;
A region of emptiness, howling and drear,
Which man hath abandoned from famine and foar;
Which the snake and the Heard Inhabit alone,
With Ihe twilight bat from the yawning stone;
Where |ra*s, nor herb, nor shrub takes root,
Save poisonous thorns that pierce the foot;
And the bitter melon, for food and drink,
Is the pilgrim's fare by the salt lake’s brink;
A region of drought, where no river glides,
Nor rippling brook with oslered sides;
Whero sedgy pool, nor bubb'ing fount.
Nor troo, nor clout, nor misty moont,
Appears to refrosh the aching eye;
Hut tho barren earth, and the buraing sky,
AQd the blank horlron, round and round,
Spread—void of living sight or sound
Aod here, whilo thi night, winds round mo sigh,
And the stars burn bright in the midnight sky,
As 1 At apart t* the desert stone,
——fjkollitjah, at March's cave alone,
- A still small voice" comes through thefwild,
(Hike a father consoling his fretful child)
Which banishes bitterness, wrath, and fear,
Saying -man is distant, but Mod is near'
