SPAIN AN.) IlEll COLONIES.
Vi'c find it statefi in our Belfast papers, says
the t/liarlestou Courier of tin* oil instunt, on the
itliority jf a private Letter from A;x-la-Lha

in the disputes between Spain and her Retailed
Colonics.
The ship Chauncsy, Capt. Mackay, froth
this port to liie Pacific Ocean, unit thence
to Canton, put into llio de Janeiro, on the
15t.i oi’ September, for a supply of provi
sions. Here ti.e vessel was seized as a pi
rate, aud tne otlicers and crew thrown into
a liitiiy dungeon, where they were couti
uoJ for several days. The spirited and
persevering conduct of Mr. Sumpter, our
Consul at that place, however, ultimately
restored the people to their iiberty, and the
vessel to t.c otl'cers, and she vas to pro
ceed on her voyage in tliree or lour days.
Or. Tainudge llailey, son of the i’ost-
Mis-ter of this city, was surgeon of
of the sqip Chauii'-ey, and although
he was in a very delicate state of health,
lie, with the rest, was thrown into a filthy
damp dungeon, thirty feet below the sur
face of tile ground. We have seen a let
ter from him on this subject, to his father,
and we hope our government will take pro
p:r notice of the transaction.' —V. I'. oa~.

SMOLLETT'S 10MB.
Situated on the banks of the. Amo, bet
ween Leghorn and Pisa, in the most ro
mantic spot that even the vivid imagina
tion of an Italian could select, rises the
tomb of our countrymen, Smollett, the au
thor of Roderick Rarnlum, &c. It is of a
plain octagons, form, about 30 feet in
height, aud six feet in diameter at the base
which forms an apartment, to which there
arc three doors. The English who vi-.it it
from the port of Leghorn, have erected a
plain marble table surrounded with stone
scats within ; and scarcely a vessel arrives
but the officers anil crews pays a visit to
Smollett's tomb. It is worthy of remark,
(as noticed in a funner paper,) that the
toi.'ib is covered with laure*, so that hardly
onefstone can be seen, and it is even bound
up to clear the entrance at the doors.—
The laurel grows wild in all parts of Pus
cany, and the homage, of friends has plan
ted many a tip on the tomb of departed
genius. Four marble stabs are placed in
side with inscriptions in the Italian, La
tin, Greek and English languages. A po
et of Italy has said pleasantly, that he ca
red not where his bones were laid, so that
thev were not molested by having bid ver
ses inscribed on the soot where they lay.
If poor Smollett had the same feelings,
how dreadfully unquiet must he be under
the weight of his epitaphs. Besides the
wretched versification, the two first con
tain what is frequently very necessary in
an epitaph, but what certainly cannot re
commend it to those who knew the subject
of it. They contain each an untruth:
Smollett did net die contented in Toscany
but with the utmost regret. Smollett did
not love every body, but was almost as
great a hater of his fellow ereatures as
Swift himself.— Lon. pap.
TIIF. L VTE MR. DORSEY.
The death of Dr. John Syng Dorsey, pro
fessor of Anatomy, has produced the fol
lowing remarks, which wc copy from l‘oul
son’s paper.
Every eye, interested in the progress of
Medical knowledge, turned to h:tn with
glauces of approbation; confidently antici
pating in him. a most promising “ under
growth” that.should supply the loss sustain
ed by the fall of a Wisiar.
Students from dilTercnt sections of our
country, iia<l already arrived in Philadel
phia. They heard his eloquent introduc
tion to a course of Lectures, which they
had reason to expect, would have been
scientific, Accurate and luminous. Alas !
they will hear his voice on more!
At the close of his introductory address,
Dr. Dorsey deplored the los* of his prede
ce-Hors in the chair he expected t. occupy,
Dii. ishippen and Wistar. I!c described
their sun as set, but honed that some
streaks of light were still left in the hori
zon* which might direct the anatomist in
his laborious way. Had he lived that wish
ed for light he would himself have exhibi
ted, am. have risen as the ethereal sun.—
On the very evening of his first lecture,
after the loud applause of a large and af
fectionate class, the chill of Death fell on
him, For ten or eleven days lie lias linger
ed ; at length, like the dew of the morning,
lie lias vanished.
