Jlkkcuant.—A merchant of New A r ork, during the late war, made a contract with a mechanic to supply him with a quantity of tin cans. Not long after this the price of tin rose so much that the contractor must lose money by completing tho work at the price agreed upon. However, he said nothing, but went on delivering the cans. When the first bill for pay of the cans was received, tho employer called upon him aud said: “I understand you are losing money on this job.” “Yes,” replied the contractor, “but I can stand it; a contract is a contract, you know.” “How much will you lose V” asked the gentleman. “Oh ! no matter,” was the reply, “I don’t complain, and you ought not to.” “I insist on knowing.” “AYell, since you desire it, I shall lose so much a hundred,” naming the amount. “AYell, sir,” said the noble hearted man, “you must not lose this ; it would not be right. I shall add the amount to your bill, and as the price of mate rial may still rise, I will advance you the money for tho whole contract, which no doubt you can now use to advantage.” The difference thus paid, to which the contractor had no claim, amounted to live hundred dollars. This was something more than business honesty; it was Christian principle carried out in business. The world needs just such examples to convince it of the truth of religion. Siiat.t, a Newspaper he Prayed for ? —The Church which does not habitually pray for its minister, cannot expect any decided blessings upon his labors. It is true that such blessings may sometimes descend in answer to his own prayers, and in spite of his Church, but that Church lias no busi ness to expect it, and ought to mingle its rejoicings with the blessings with repentance for its own indifference. It is a settled point, that the ministry cam\ot perform its wprk iuuiuet««»o<l by the prayers of God’s people. Ought it then to be expected, that the religious newspaper shall perforin its work without the same support? That work is in many respects of the same kind with that of the ministers of Jesus Christ, while the range of its influence is immensely wider. The minister can only speak to a few hun dreds ; often less than a singie hun dred. The newspaper audience is until the thousands. Probably the sheet which conveys this article will be read by five or six thou sand persons. Wliat an audience is this! The religious sentiments and habits of thought of the religious pub lic are formed in a good measure by the newspaper which has its confi dence. Ought not then the newspa per to be prayed for, that its conduc tors may have the spirit of wisdom; of a sound mind, of their Lord and master? Its conduct is a great and difficult work, weighed down with responsibility, suspending interest vast as the years of eternity. If, instead of complaining at, the Christian would pray for his newspa per, it might often suit him better, at the same time that is better promoted tho interests of Christ’s Kingdom. The Samutu.—When George 111. was repairing his palace at Kew, one of the workmen was particularly no ticed by his majesty.* One Monday morning the King went, as uwal, to watch the progress of the work, and not seeing the man in his usual place, he inquired tho reason of his absence. He was at first answered evasively by the workmen; at last, however, they acknowledged that not having been able to complete a particular job on the Saturday night, they had returned to finish it on the Sunday morning, which this man refusing to, do he had been dismissed from the employment. “Send him back immediately,” said the King; “the man who refuses to do his ordinary work on the Lord’s day is the man for me.” Shultz 5 Hill For Sale, I WILL HELL AT KBASONABLE TERMS THE SHULTZ* 11ILL, Hamburg, S. 0.
