LARGEST CITY CIRCULATION
Official Organ of the U. 8- Government.
TUESDAY MORNING January 14,1868
A L OST VIGIL.
BT SWISBrRNE.
Couldst thou not watch with mo one hour!
Behold,
Dawn skims the sea with flying feet of gold,
With sadden feet that grate the gradual seas;
Couldst thou not watch with me ?
What, not one hour? for star by star the night
Falls, and her thousands world by world take
flight;
They die, and day survives, and what of thee ?
Couldst thou not watch with me ?
Sunbeam by sunbeam creeps from line to line,
Foam by foam quickcnß on the brightening
brine;
Sail by sail passes, flower by flower gets free;
Couldst thou not watch with me ?
The old year’s dead hands arc full of their dead
flowers,
The old days are full of dead old loves of ours,
Born as a rose, and briefer born than she;
Couldst thou not watch with me ?
What of the night ? The night is lull, the tide
Storms inland, the most rock divide;
Yet some endure, and bow nor head nor knee,
Couldst thou not watch with me ?
Since thou art not as these are, go thy ways;
Thou hast no part in all my nights and days.
Lie still, sleep on, be glad.—as such things be,
Thou couldst not watch with me.

Opinions of the Press.
“Musical Festivals’ - several times postponed,
compelling purchasers of tickets to wait months
for the distribution, has impaired public confidence
n such affairs. The only fair system of distribu
tion is tlie old and popular one of Sealed Tickets,
stating the prize, which will be delivered immedi
ately, on payment of the one dollar. That is the
pianos H. BARTON & CO., at 599 Broadway,
the most attractive place of the kind now in oper
ation. They are doing the largest business, and
deserve their success. Yon can not draw a
SIOO,OOO farm there, bnt have a reasonable chance
for a good prize, as we know many that have been
drawn, and the firm is reliable. —Morning Adver
tiser, Oct. 25th, 1867.
Tlie New York Gift Company are distributing
many valuable prizes. We have examined their
manner of doing business and know them to be a
fair dealing firm. Their plan is more satisfactory
than “Presentation Festivals,” as they draw every
day, and the subscriber need not, pay for the prize
drawn, unless suited.— Gazette, Oct. 24//t, 1867.
Tlie Gift establishment of 11. Barton &. Cos., at
599 Broadway, is daily attracting crowds of visi
tors to witness the drawing process. The invest
ment is bnt 25 cents for the chance, and the prize
drawn, if satisfactory, is immediately delivered
for one dollar. A friend of ours, last week, drew
a SSOO prize, which he promptly received.—Trans
